Ingredients

Filling

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion finely chopped - medium-size
  • 2 carrots diced
  • 2 celery stalks diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • ½ cup peas frozen

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 pounds potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup milk

Instructions

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Sauté the onion, carrots, and celery until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the ground beef, breaking it apart, cooking until browned.
  • Mix in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and flour, cooking for 2 minutes.
  • Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring to create a thick gravy.
  • Season with thyme, salt, and pepper.
  • Simmer for 10 minutes, then mix in the frozen peas and carrots.
  • Boil the potatoes in a large pot until tender, about 15 minutes.
  • Drain and return them to the pot.
  • Mash the potatoes with butter and milk until smooth.
  • Season with salt and pepper.
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Spread the beef filling in an even layer in a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Top with the mashed potatoes.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  • Let the dish cool for 5 minutes before serving.
