Ingredients

Filling

  • 4 apples peeled, cored, and sliced - large
  • 2 cups blackberries
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup butter cold and cubed - unsalted

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish. A 2.5 to 3 quarts round dish will also work.
  • Combine the sliced apples, blackberries, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Toss until the fruit is evenly coated. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  • Mix the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the crumble topping in another bowl. Add the cold cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the fruit mixture in the baking dish.
  • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly, and the topping is golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, if desired.
