Strawberry Jello Salad is a classic side dish passed down through the generations. Simple to make with just 5 ingredients, just mix & serve.
Did you grow up having jello salad at all your family gatherings? We sure did.
It seems to be that the overall public either loves it or hates it. There’s no in-between and that includes our house. (mainly because of the cottage cheese)
We have 60% of the house that absolutely loves it – so, since that is considered the majority, I always make sure we have some for all our events. Check it out!
What I love about this recipe is that not only is is easy to make, but it can be served with so many things. On top of that, I can tailor it to whatever flavor jello I have on hand, or the flavor we are craving at the time.
It doesn’t matter, it’s all good. Plus it brings a little bit of nostalgia to our gatherings since this one is straight out of grandma’s recipe box.

Here are some commonly asked questions
What is the best way to store leftover jello salad?
Just keep it refrigerated for up to 4 days. As long as you don’t let it sit out at room temperature for too long, this should keep well when chilled in an airtight container.
Can this be made with low-fat cottage cheese?
Yes, you can make jello salad with any variety of cottage cheese to suit your preference. Since this is my grandmother’s recipe, we always stick to the small curd, full fat.

For this recipe, you will need the whipped cream to be stabilized – which is why we use the whipped topping. If you can stabilize regular whipped cream, then you can use it in this recipe.

HOW DO YOU MAKE JELLO SALAD?
- Combine the cottage cheese, drained pineapple, whipped topping, mini marshmallows, and the jello powder in a large mixing bowl.
- Stir well until all of the ingredients are incorporated.
- Chill until ready to serve.
- Serve with a sprinkle of chopped pecans and additional mini marshmallows if desired.
Can jello salad be frozen?
Due to the dairy in this recipe, freezing doesn’t yield the best results once thawed, unfortunately. It tends to get watery and the salad becomes uncoagulated. It isn’t visually appealing and does change the overall taste as well. I don’t recommend it.

Can I use sugar-free jello?
Yes, you can. Regular or sugar-free will work. Check the notes in the recipe for the size of the box you will be looking for when it comes to the sugar-free variety – the box weight changes, but it is still the correct quantity.
Is jello salad a dessert?
When jello salad first came out there were many varieties and versions to choose from. You might remember some recipes being in the shape of a jello mold. Some were sweet and interestingly enough, some were even on the savory side.
These days it can be served as either a sweet side dish (probably the most common) or an after dinner dessert. We serve it as a side, but the kids often have the leftovers for breakfast too.
