Common Questions About Steak Fried Rice
Can I Use Leftover Steak for This Recipe?
Absolutely! Leftover steak is perfect for this dish. Just cut it into bite-sized pieces and add it to the skillet when you would the fresh steak.
What Kind of Rice Works Best?
Day-old rice, preferably jasmine or long-grain white rice, works wonders as it has the perfect texture and a slightly drier consistency that fries well.
It’s really a great way to use up leftover rice. You’ll add a lot of great flavor to it this way. A much better option for the whole family than just sticking it into the microwave!
Can I Add Other Vegetables?
Definitely! It’s an easy way to sneak more veggies into the meal. Feel free to include bell peppers, peas, carrots, or any leftover vegetables you have on hand. This recipe is great for customization.
Storage
This one is an easy meal for leftovers. For me, that’s one of the great things about rice and why I always make a big batch.
Refrigerator
Cool the fried rice completely before transferring it to an airtight container. It will keep for up to 3 days.
Freezer
While freezing is possible, it’s best enjoyed fresh to maintain the texture of the rice and steak.
Tips
Some people prefer brown rice. These days, though, a lot of the supposed health benefits there have been debunked. For me, that authentic flavor is white rice all the way.
- Use cold rice: This helps to prevent the rice from becoming mushy when frying.
- Cook on medium-high heat: A hot pan ensures the rice gets a nice crisp and the steak cooks quickly, retaining its tenderness.
- Prep ingredients beforehand: Having everything chopped and ready to go makes the cooking process smooth and quick.
- Season well: Don’t be shy with the soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil—they give this dish its iconic flavor.
- Garnish generously: A sprinkle of green onions adds a fresh contrast to the rich flavors of the dish.

How to Make Steak Fried Rice
Adding the beaten eggs to this rice is one of my favorite parts. It brings a lot of heartiness and ties everything together!
- Heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet or wok.
- Add diced sirloin steak and cook until browned on all sides.
- Season with salt and black pepper as desired. Remove the steak from the skillet and set it aside.
- In the same skillet, add more oil if needed, then sauté the garlic and ginger until fragrant.
- Add the mixed vegetables and onion, cooking until the vegetables are tender yet still crisp.
- Create a space in the center of the bottom of the skillet and add the eggs. Cook, stirring and breaking into pieces, until cooked through. Then mix with the vegetables in the skillet.
- Push the vegetables and egg mixture to one side of the skillet and add the chilled rice on the other side. Break up any clumps and stir-fry the rice until it’s heated through and slightly crispy.
- Return the cooked steak to the skillet, and combine it with the rice and vegetables.
- Pour the soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil over the mixture. Stir well to ensure an even distribution of flavors.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste, and continue cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to come together.
- Garnish with chopped green onions before serving.
