Here are some commonly asked questions
What are Snowman Cookies?
Snowman Cookies are festive holiday treats made from either basic sugar cookie dough or in this case, a cake mix that is decorated like a snowman with either icing or candy.
What size cookie scoop do you use?
I really like to use a medium scoop. Now when I say medium, that is what is defined when you do a random product search. By my standards, it seems small & almost every single time I question if, in fact, that is the same scoop I used previously.
After they bake, they really do turn out to be the perfect size for a cookie – especially when you are trying to fit a face on the tops of them.
Do I need to press these cookies before baking?
No – not for these cookies. I know that some cake mix cookies require you to gently press them down a bit before you bake them. However, with these, we want to keep them a bit puffier when they bake because we want them to be able to hold the M&M’s when we press them down into the warm cookies.
If we were to press the cookies, they would bake too thin and they wouldn’t hold the M&M’s quite as well.
Variations and Add-ins
- Sprinkles – Add holiday sprinkles for additional color and fun.
- Chocolate Chips – Add chocolate chips to the mix or you can use chocolate chips instead of the M&M’s for the mouth and eyes.
- Frosting – Add frosting to the top of the cookie for added deliciousness – then add the snowman face to the frosting.
- Filling – To make these super decadent – you can take the frosting and use it as a filling to make these cookies into a sandwich cookie. They will look similar to a whoopie pie and be super cute.
Tips and Tricks
Start with any brand of cake mixes. I typically use Betty Crocker for the softest cookies.
Change it up by using a different flavor such as a chocolate cake mix, vanilla cake mix, french vanilla cake mix, yellow butter cake mix, lemon cake mix, or my personal favorite a holiday funfetti cake mix. Although it won’t really be a snowman anymore if you use the chocolate flavor of cake mix.
For a richer flavor, try adding vanilla extract or almond extract to these cake mix Christmas cookies.
I like to use vegetable oil vs canola oil for these delicious cookies.
Making these adorable snowman cookies is the easiest cookie recipe for a holiday cookie exchange. It will soon be one of your favorite holiday traditions.
What are some good decorations to use on Snowman Cookies?
Tootsie Rolls, gummy candies, gumdrops, sprinkles, and edible glitter are all great options for decorating Snowman Cookies. You can also get creative with food coloring and other ingredients to make your snowmen truly unique.
Ingredients for Snowman Cake Mix Cookies
- white cake mix
- cooking oil
- eggs
- M&M’s
Can these cookies be made ahead of time?
You bet. This cookie dough can be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator for up to 4 days prior to baking. Make sure to cover it tightly with plastic wrap so it doesn’t dry out. Let it sit out at room temperature for about 10 minutes before rolling and baking.
Can these cookies be frozen?
Sure – The dough freezes well. You can roll it into balls, place them on a baking sheet, and freeze them until firm.
Then just store them in an airtight container or plastic freezer bag.
To bake, remove as many balls as you need from the freezer and let thaw for 30 minutes, then roll in the sugar and bake.
How to Make Snowman Cake Mix Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Line a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper. Set aside.
- Combine the cake mix, oil & eggs in a large mixing bowl & mix with a large, firm spatula until smooth and well combined.
- Scoop out the dough onto the prepared baking sheet. I like to use a cookie scoop for uniform size.
- Bake 7-9 minutes.
- Remove and immediately add the M&M’s to the tops of the cookies in a snowman face pattern while they are still warm so that the candies stay put once cooled.
- After about 5 minutes on the baking sheet, transfer the cookies to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days.
What is the best way to store snowman cookies?
These cookies will keep for up to 5 days if kept in an airtight container at room temperature. I don’t recommend refrigerating them once they have had the M&M’s added to them. The M&M’s color will bleed when they are in a damp or cold environment and they look really unappealing.
What is the best way to gift Snowman Cookies?
Snowman Cookies make great gifts! You can wrap them in cellophane or parchment paper and tie them with a ribbon for a festive presentation. If you are sending them by mail, make sure to securely pack them in an airtight container so they don’t get crushed during transit.

Are Snowman Cookies suitable for children?
Yes, Snowman Cookies are a fun and festive treat that kids of all ages can enjoy. However, small children should be supervised when decorating the cookies to ensure they don’t eat any of the uncooked ingredients.
What other holiday treats can I make with Snowman Cookie dough?
You can use the same cookie dough to make festive designs such as stars, Christmas trees, snowflakes, and more. If desired, you could also sprinkle some cinnamon or nutmeg in the dough for a delicious spiced flavor. Enjoy baking!
