PIN THIS TO SAVE FOR LATER
My friends – when it comes to cooking – I love to take the bulk of it outdoors. Even though we live in North Idaho – where the weather isn’t always conducive to outdoor cooking – it is still my preferred method.
We have had 4+ feet of snow on the deck and we have still made sure to smoke our main dish like this one for holidays. You just can’t beat that incredible flavor that is so tender and juicy.
This will be your new favorite recipe for more than the holidays!

Here are some commonly asked questions
What is a spiral ham?
A spiral ham is a type of ham that has been cut into a spiral shape. This makes it easier to slice and serve than traditional ham. Spiral hams are often served at holiday meals or special occasions.
What Traeger model is needed for this recipe?
I would say that most standing Traeger models can handle roasting a ham this size. We have the Pro 34 in blue & we take out the swinging rack from the lid when we make large things like this ham. I don’t think we could make this recipe on our portable Ranger model that we use for camping because the lid doesn’t give it enough space.

What pellets do you recommend?
I personally prefer using applewood or cherry for meats like ham and turkey. However – you can use whatever flavor you like depending on the overall flavor you are looking for.
You could always fill the hopper with a sweet pellet for the early smoke and then use something like hickory or mesquite for the finishing smoke.

Smoked Ham Ingredients
- spiral ham
- apple cider vinegar
Glaze
- dark brown sugar – packed
- maple syrup
- apple cider vinegar
- mustard
- Worcestershire sauce
- ground cloves
What is the best way to store leftover ham?
After serving, place any leftover ham in a shallow airtight container. Be sure to label with the date before refrigerating. This ham should keep for up to 5 days if not left out for too long. As with most things, it is important to get food into the refrigerator within 1 hour after serving to prevent bacteria growth.
Why use a shallow container to store the leftovers?
Well, when the container is shallow, the contents chill faster than if you were to use a large, deep container. Ideally, you don’t want it to take too long for the leftovers to get to their chilled/stored temperature.
As I mentioned, if the food remains above about 35 degrees for more than 1 hour after cooking, the bacteria starts to grow.
Can you freeze ham?
Yes, you can freeze leftover ham. Just portion out whatever you aren’t going to use & place it in a shallow, airtight & freezer-safe container. Label with the contents & the date before placing it in the freezer.
I like to use a zip-top bag for this & portion it out into a “per-day” amount so that we are only thawing what we can reasonably use which cuts waste.
How to Make Traeger Smoked Ham
- Preheat the smoker to 250 degrees f.
- Place the ham, cut side down, into a large sheet pan, and place it in the preheated smoker. Cook for one hour.
- Baste the ham with the apple cider vinegar after one hour and then every 30 minutes afterward, until the ham has reached an internal temperature of 135 degrees F.
- When the ham is almost done cooking, prepare the glaze.
Glaze
- In a small (high heat safe) saucepan or cast-iron skillet, combine all of the glaze ingredients and whisk together. (dark brown sugar, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and ground cloves.)
- Cook the glaze on the smoker (next to the ham) for 10-15 minutes, stirring frequently with a whisk, just until the glaze comes together.
- Brush the ham liberally with the maple glaze and then cook for 15 minutes or until the ham reaches 140 degrees F.
- Remove the ham from the smoker and tent it with aluminum foil. Allow it to rest for about 30 minutes.
- Serve with the reserved drippings on the side, if desired.
Can this recipe be doubled?
If you are making this on one of the pro-series Traeger models – then you should be able to accommodate having 2 trays (quarter sheet) with 2 hams in there. I do believe that it can fit a full-sheet baking pan, so you could theoretically fit 2 hams side-by-side on the same pan.
What temperature should ham be cooked to?
Ham should be cooked to an internal temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a meat thermometer to check the temperature of the ham before serving.
What is the difference between a smoked ham and a regular ham?
A smoked ham has been cured in a smokehouse, which gives it a distinct flavor. A regular ham has not been smoked and will have a milder flavor.

How much smoked ham do you need per person?
A general rule of thumb is to allow for about 1/2 pound of ham per person. This will ensure that there is plenty of ham to go around and that everyone gets their fill. If you are serving a lot of other dishes, you may want to reduce this amount slightly.
What is the best way to reheat a smoked ham?
The best way to reheat a smoked ham is in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and then place the ham in a baking dish.
Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the ham is heated through. You can also reheat a smoked ham in the microwave.
What to serve with Smoked Ham
This recipe is so versatile you can serve it with just about anything. But here are some of our favorites.

- Crockpot Cranberry Cider
- Italian Garlic Butter – great for rubbing the outside of the bird before cooking
