This simple scalloped potatoes and ham recipe is the perfect comfort food packed with cheese, ham, potatoes, and heavy cream.
My secret to make this delicious ham and scalloped potatoes is to use cheddar cheese soup and heavy cream to thicken the sauce and enhance the cheesy flavor. Yum! Finger-licking good combination.

Ingredients Notes
See the exact quantities in the recipe card at the bottom of the page.
- Potatoes. I use peeled and thinly sliced potatoes, but if you have young fresh harvest, you can use unpeeled potatoes, as they have thin skin that will add little texture. The best potatoes for this potato dish are Yukon gold potatoes, Idaho or Russet potatoes, they are quite buttery, starchy, and rich, yet don’t fall apart.
- Onion. I prefer fresh onion, but you can use onion powder in a pinch
- Cooked Ham. Cook ham or use Easter ham leftovers. Spiral ham, baked ham – anything works! If your leftover ham was frozen, make sure to thaw it overnight before cooking.
- Shredded cheddar cheese. Always shred your own cheese, just buy a block and shred it beforehand.
- Cheddar cheese soup is my secret ingredient to make an ultra-cheesy and thick sauce to smother potatoes.
- Heavy cream to make a rich and creamy sauce. You can use milk, but I find it makes the sauce too thin and may be runny.
- Kosher salt and black pepper to taste.
Kitchen Equipment
- 6qt Crock Pot
- Optional, slow cooker liner for quicker and easier clean-up.
- Cooking spray or oil
- Sharp knife, a food processor with a mandoline slicer, or a standalone mandolin slicer.

- Prepare the cooker insert by spraying lightly with cooking oil to help prevent sticking.
- Add half of the potato slices, half of the onion, half of the diced ham, and โ of the cheese to the bottom of the cooker – in that order.
- Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
- Repeat the layers. Finish with a final layer of sliced potatoes.
2: Make The Creamy Sauce
- Whisk the soup and heavy cream together in a small bowl and then pour it over the top of the layers.
- Top with the remaining ham and shredded cheese.
3: Cook Crock Pot Scalloped Potatoes Ham

- If you want, you can top the cooked scalloped potatoes with sliced green onions, parsley, or cilantro.
- Meanwhile, you can prep a side dish to go with the potato main dish – a simple salad, steamed or roasted veggies will be just perfect.
Storage

Substitutions & Variations
- You can change it up with different kinds of ham or other meat, change the variety of cheese, add green onions or other veggies too.
- Cheese. You can use white cheddar, mild or sharp cheddar cheese, or other melting cheese. You can also use a mix of cheeses and add cheese like Monterey jack, mozzarella, or gruyere.
- Jazz up the spices. Add smoked paprika, thyme, mustard powder, and garlic powder (or fresh garlic).
- Bulk it up with peas, diced carrots, mushrooms, or corn kernels. You can even omit the ham to make this recipe vegetarian.
- Make it spicy: mix in some hot sauce or cayenne pepper.
- Soup options. I love it cheesy, but you can also use regular or low-sodium chicken broth, or mushroom soup.
- Try this slow cooker recipe using red potatoes, leftover savory ham, topped with a creamy white sauce, and sprinkled with fresh parsley.
Expert Tips To Make The Best Slow Cooker Scalloped Potatoes And Ham
- The cheesy sauce can be pre-cooked. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter, with garlic (or onion) and add flour to start the roux. Then add heavy cream, seasoning, and soup or broth, and simmer, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
- Dump and go recipe can work too, without meticulous layering. Simply load everything and mix together.
Popular Questions
Can Scalloped Potatoes Be Cooked In A Slow Cooker?

What Is The Difference Between Scalloped Potatoes And Au Gratin Potatoes?
