Pumpkin Spice Latte
Here are some commonly asked questions
What is a Pumpkin Spice Latte?
A Pumpkin Spice Latte is a coffee drink that combines espresso with steamed milk and pumpkin spice flavoring. It is often topped with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spices. The latte is a popular seasonal drink, typically available from September through December.
WHAT IS PUMPKIN PIE SPICE MADE OF?
Pumpkin Pie Spice is made of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. You can use it to make your own pumpkin pie spice by mixing these spices together.
Can this be made ahead of time?
Yes – you can make this ahead of time. I recommend making the milk mixture and then storing it in the fridge in an airtight container. When you are ready to enjoy it, pour your portion into your mug and reheat in the microwave until steaming, but not boiling. You don’t want to scald the milk.
Then add your shot of hot coffee concentrate or espresso and add your toppings. I recommend making a double batch so you can make one every morning.
What is the best way to store leftover Pumpkin Spice Latte?
Pumpkin Spice Latte can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. I don’t recommend freezing as the fats in dairy products tend to separate when frozen. When reheating, make sure to heat slowly so as not to scorch the milk.
Pumpkin Spice Latte Ingredients
- milk – dairy or non-dairy
- pumpkin puree
- granulated sugar
- vanilla extract
- pumpkin pie spice
- concentrated coffee or espresso
- whipped cream – topping
What is the difference between Pumpkin Pie Mix and Pumpkin Puree? Which one is used for this recipe?
Pumpkin Pie Mix is a mixture of pumpkin puree, sweetener and spices combined that is used to make pumpkin pie. Pumpkin Puree is a pureed form of pumpkin and can be used in recipes that call for canned pumpkin. It does not contain any other ingredients, it is just pureed pumpkin.
The recipe calls for pumpkin puree because it does not contain all the additional ingredients in the pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling can also be used in this recipe, however, most people think that it makes the dessert too sweet. I prefer to stick to puree.
What if I don’t have Pumpkin Pie Spice?
I understand that you might not keep pumpkin pie spice on hand – or maybe you used so much last season that you may have run out. No problem – just blend the following ingredients together and you will have your own homemade pumpkin pie spice.
- 1/3 cup cinnamon
- 1 tbsp each of ground ginger, nutmeg, ground cloves
- 2 tsp Allspice
What kind of milk do you use for a Pumpkin Spice Latte?
Whole milk will produce the creamiest latte, but you can also use low-fat or non-fat milk. Soy, almond, and coconut milk are also popular choices.
How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte
- In a small/medium pot, add the milk, pumpkin puree, and sugar. Mix and heat on the stove. Remove right BEFORE it starts boiling. (you’ll start to see the steam coming off the milk)
- Then add the vanilla extract and the pumpkin pie spice. Whisk until well combined.
- Pour the flavored milk into glasses or mugs and then pour the coffee on top.
- Then top with whipped cream and sprinkle some more pumpkin pie spice on top.
- Enjoy while hot!
Do you use coffee or espresso for a Pumpkin Spice Latte?
A Pumpkin Spice Latte is typically made with espresso, but can also be made with brewed coffee. If using brewed coffee, we recommend using dark roast coffee for the best flavor.
Can this be made with additional shots of espresso?
Yes, you can certainly add additional shots of espresso to your Pumpkin Spice Latte. Just keep in mind that the more espresso you add, the less sweet the drink will become.
Can this be made with a sugar substitute?
Yes, you can use a sugar substitute in place of the sugar called for in the recipe. Just keep in mind that the flavor may be slightly different.
