Here are some commonly asked questions
What are mummy candy apples?
Mummy candy apples are an easy Halloween recipe that you can make at home. They’re made from apples that have been coated in chocolate, and they’re then covered in drizzles of additional chocolate and candy eyes. They make a great treat for kids or adults who love scary foods for Halloween!
What are some variations of mummy candy apples?
Some variations of mummy candy apples include ghost candy apples, black widow candy apples, and Frankenstein candy apples.
Ghost candy apples are made by coating regular apple slices in a dark chocolate shell and then sprinkling white sugar on top.
Black widow candy apples are made by coating regular apple slices in a black chocolate shell and then sprinkling red sugar on top.
Frankenstein Candy Apples are made by taking two normal apple slices, cutting one into the shape of a heart, and then dipping it into melted chocolate.
Ingredients for Mummy Candy Apples
- Granny Smith apples – washed, dried, and stems removed
- white candy melts
- coconut oil or vegetable shortening – optional
- M&M candies, Skittles, or chocolate chips
How long do mummy candy apples last?
Mummy candy apples will last for up to 3 days if kept in an airtight container. I don’t recommend placing them in the fridge. Not only will the candy eyes start to bleed in the moist air, but the chocolate coating tends to crack in the refrigerator.
How to Make Mummy Candy Apples
- Insert the wooden dowels into the center (stem) of the apples.
- Place the white candy melts and coconut oil or vegetable shortening, if using, into a microwave-safe bowl.
- Microwave the chocolate on high for 1 minute. Stir vigorously to allow the candy to continue melting with the residual heat.
- Return the candy to the microwave and heat in 15-second intervals, stirring well between each, until the candy mixture is smooth.
- Pour the candy melts over each apple, allowing the excess to run back into the bowl.
- Place the apples on parchment paper to dry.
- When the apples are almost completely set, press the eyes into place. Then, allow the candy to completely harden before completing the following steps.
- If needed, reheat the candy by melting in the microwave for 15 to 30 seconds.
- Place the apples with the eyes on their side and then drizzle the apples in one direction with the candy. When the candy is almost completely set, drizzle again in the opposite direction.
- Allow the candy to totally harden before flipping the apples and repeating the process on the opposite side.
- Make sure the candy is hardened before packaging or serving.
What is the best apple to use for candy apples?
The best apple to use for candy apples is the Granny Smith apple. Granny Smith apples are a great option for candy apples because they’re tart and sweet, which makes them perfect for Halloween. They also have hard skin, so they stay fresh longer than other types of apples.
How to store caramel apples?
I find that the best way is to wrap them individually with plastic wrap or place them in a paper bag and fold the bag closed. I don’t recommend refrigeration unless the apples have been cut open.
Expert Tips
- Almond bark can be substituted for the candy melts but it is not entirely white.
- Any small candy or morsels can be used for the eyes.
- The vegetable shortening or coconut oil helps the candy melts pour in a smoother consistency.
- Refrigerating the apples may cause cracking of the candy.
- If desired, apples can be coated in melted caramel before coating them in white chocolate.
- For easier drizzling of the candy, you can use a piping bag with a flat tip but be aware that the candy runs from the bag very quickly.
