Milk Dud Cake Mix Bars are just another yummy bar recipe that is a MUST MAKE! Incredibly simple & easy desserts don’t get any more delicious than this.
One of my favorite things to make for dessert is a yummy bar recipe. They are simple & easy & practically effortless to make. Plus, you can customize them to just about any craving.
This time I had a whole bunch of milk duds in the pantry. My son can’t have them with his braces, so those were the cast-offs from his stash. I did my best to keep everyone from snacking on them here & there because I knew I would need them all to create this delectable dessert!

Like a super thick but chewy brownie & loaded with ALL THE GOOD STUFF! Seriously, with as easy as these are to make, you have no excuse! (I used my favorite 9×13 pan for this- it’s a perfect size)
Chocolate Cake Mix Bars
Here are some commonly asked questions
What is the best way to store leftover cake mix bars?
Place a lid on the baking pan or transfer the bars to an airtight container and keep at room temperature for up to 4 days.
Can these be made with another flavor of cake mix?
You bet – these are great with any flavor of cake mix. Change it up and create your own variations depending on your craving for the day. That’s what makes these so great!
How do you make milk dud cake mix bars?
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a 9×13 glass baking pan with cooking spray. Set aside.
- Mix the cake mix, evaporated milk, and melted butter in a mixer – beating well.
- Add 1 cup of the milk duds and 1 cup of the chocolate chips – beat well.
- Transfer ¾ of the batter to the prepared pan and spread out flat in the bottom as best you can. It’s very sticky. You can wet your hands to make it stick a bit less or use a rubber spatula coated in cooking spray.
- Bake for 10 minutes, then remove.
- Top with remaining milk duds & chocolate chips.
- Drop the remaining batter on the top in spoonfuls- do not spread out – leave it chunky.
- Return to the oven and bake for another 40-45 minutes.
- Check with the toothpick test- it should be mostly clean.
- Remove and allow to cool completely before cutting.
- Store at room temperature in an airtight container.
Can you use Reece cups or Rolos instead?
Well, I have not personally made those versions yet. I would imagine that both would taste pretty good. I can’t see why it wouldn’t work. Please let me know if you give it a try.

Ingredients for Milk Dud Cake Mix Bars
- devils food cake mix
- evaporated milk
- butter – melted
- Milk Duds
- semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips
Should I use salted or unsalted butter?
This is really a personal preference. If you are happy with just a little salt to cut the sweetness, then use salted butter.
I usually use whatever I have on hand & I really don’t pay too close attention to what butter I have. But I typically keep salted butter on hand & I love that little bit of extra salt with the sweet in this recipe.
These days with groceries being more difficult to find – I basically get whatever the store has available at the time and make it work.
What is the best way to cut cake mix bars?
There are a number of ways to get the best cuts when it comes to portioning out these bars – check out my tips below.
- Use a hot knife, wiping clean after each cut.
- Use a plastic knife – this is my favorite. Not sure why, but they work better.
- Make sure the bars are completely cooled after baking.
- If the decorations allow, (meaning they won’t be ruined by refrigeration) – chilling the bars always makes it so much easier to cut them cleanly. Just make sure to bring them back to room-temperature before serving – they taste so much better that way.
