Here are some commonly asked questions
Why make your own Keto BBQ Sauce?
When trying to stick to a Keto, sugar-free, or low-carb diet there are a lot of things to keep in mind. What I noticed when trying to buy products to replace our sugar-filled versions is that there are what seems like a billion different names for sugar and sugar substitutes.
When reading labels you need to know all the secret little ways that sugar can be added to what you are buying. Generally, you want to avoid ingredients that will spike your blood sugar – which is why it can be so much easier to just make your own so you know exactly what is being added.
How to store sugar-free bbq sauce
This sauce is best kept refrigerated until you plan on using it. I like to put it in a jar with a tight lid and keep it in the fridge for up to 10 days.
If you aren’t going to use it all right away – you can portion out some of it and freeze it in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag for up to a couple of months. Thaw it by placing the container in a bowl of warm water for about an hour. Then reheat as needed on the stovetop.
What should I use this sauce on?
While the possibilities are endless when it comes to what you can slather this sauce on. Here are some of our favorite recipes to use this sauce. These are all standard recipes, but can easily be adapted to a keto version.
Why do I need to cook Keto BBQ Sauce?
When you cook your barbecue sauce, it undergoes a process called reduction, where some or most of the water is allowed to evaporate from the mix and the ingredients are allowed to carmelize.
This is what gives you those thick and rich qualities you want in a good barbecue sauce. Reduction is what allows all of the flavors to marry, and ensures that it is the right consistency to stick to your meat and properly flavor it.
It also helps the powdered erythritol or another sugar substitute to dissolve – so please don’t skip this step.

How to Make Keto BBQ Sauce
- Combine the water, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, powdered erythritol, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, mustard powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, and salt in a small saucepan.
- Stir and bring it to a boil over medium heat, stirring continuously.
- Reduce to low heat and simmer for 15 minutes until the water evaporates and the sauce thickens. This will bold in the flavors and reduce the tomato paste tartness. Once you have achieved the desired consistency, remove it from heat.
- Taste and add extra salt or cayenne pepper, if desired.
- Add 1 tbsp of butter, providing a glossy look to your sauce.
Recipe Notes
- You can replace powdered erythritol with any powdered keto sweetener or a granulated sweetener that dissolves.
- The powdered erythritol cancels out to zero – so net carbs for the entire 1-cup recipe should be 7. If you divide that into 1-ounce servings, then the net carbs for each would be less than 1 carb.
- Delicious and easy-to-make Keto-friendly BBQ Sauce. We used powdered erythritol in this one, and the taste difference isn’t noticeable at all.
- The result was a tasty, slightly sweet, and smoky BBQ sauce that it’s ready in less than 20 minutes.
