Here are some commonly asked questions
Can I use canned artichokes for this recipe?
Yes. Canned artichokes are what we are using here as they are more cost-effective and are more readily available. You can use regularly cooked artichokes, but you may prefer to use fresh artichokes as the baking process could make the canned variety too soft and mushy if you overdo it.
Can I substitute the parmesan for a different type of cheese?
Absolutely! If you would prefer to mix up the flavors for this recipe, you can swap the parmesan with another hard cheese like cheddar or asiago. These cheeses bring a distinct sharp, sweet flavor that pairs nicely with the sweetness of the cream cheese and the spiciness of the jalapenos.
How long can I store my Jalapeno Artichoke Dip in the refrigerator?
Provided that you did not leave it at room temperature after cooking or during serving for more than an hour, you can store your Jalapeno Artichoke Dip in the refrigerator for up to two days before you should make another batch.
It is important to know that the refrigerator does not stop the growth of microbes in your food, but slows their reproduction. This means that if you leave your food at room temperature for too long, you will be starting with more bacteria when you put it in the refrigerator, providing more organisms that can replicate once they are allowed to sit in your food.
Can Jalapeno Artichoke Dip be frozen?
Yes. This dish can be prepared and then frozen to be used at a later time. Be sure to use full-fat cream cheese to prevent separation during the thawing process. Also, I find it especially useful to use a disposable aluminum pan when creating this dish for meal prep. This makes it easy to place in the oven to thaw and reduces the amount of clean-up time.
Ingredients for Jalapeno Artichoke Dip
- cream cheese – softened
- mayonnaise
- sour cream
- shredded parmesan cheese – divided
- diced jalapenos – divided (if you prefer a spicier dip, include more seeds)
- artichoke hearts – chopped
How do I control the spiciness of my dip?
The heat that is characteristic of peppers is caused by a waxy chemical called capsaicin. When preparing jalapenos for cooking, most of the capsaicin is found in the seeds of the pepper.
If you would prefer to add more spice to your dish, be sure to include more of the seeds when adding your peppers. Know that removing all of the seeds from the peppers does not necessarily remove all of the spicinesses but it will moderate it.
How to Make Jalapeno Artichoke Dip
- Preheat the oven to 375ºF.
- Combine the cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, ½ cup parmesan cheese, and ½ cup jalapenos in a medium mixing bowl. Mix until combined.
- Add the chopped artichokes and mix again.
- Transfer the mixture to a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- Sprinkle the remaining jalapenos and cheese on top.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
Why do I need to cook my Jalapeno Artichoke Dip?
Note that this dish contains four types of cheese mixed with the peppers and the artichokes. Cooking your dip allows the cheeses to melt and blend together and adopt the flavor of the peppers and the artichokes throughout. It will also allow fresh jalapenos and artichokes to soften, allowing for a smoother consistency when enjoying this dish.
One of my favorite parts about baking this dish is the golden-brown crust that forms on top. In my opinion, this is the most flavorful part of the dish as it includes toasted cheese and adds a slight crunch.
