Common Questions About Italian Meatballs
Can You Use Fresh Herbs Instead of Dried?
Absolutely! Fresh herbs are always a wonderful addition to any dish, and meatballs are no exception. If you have fresh parsley and basil on hand, feel free to use them. Keep in mind that fresh herbs are generally more potent, so adjust quantities accordingly.
How Do You Know When the Meatballs Are Done?
The meatballs are done when they are thoroughly cooked through and have an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) when checked with a meat thermometer. The slow cooker method used in this recipe ensures a gentle and even cooking process, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
Can Italian Meatballs Be Made Without Breadcrumbs?
Breadcrumbs are a classic Italian meatball ingredient that helps to bind the meatballs and keep them juicy. However, if you are following a low-carb or gluten-free diet, you can use gluten-free breadcrumbs or even almond meal as a substitute.
Storage
In my home, these meatballs don’t last long. The kids will eat them, hot or cold!
Refrigerator
Once cooked, allow the meatballs to cool. Place them in an airtight container along with any leftover marinara sauce and store them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Freezer
The great meatball will freeze well, which is perfect if you plan to make a lot of meatballs. For freezing meatballs, lay the uncooked meatballs on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze.
Once frozen, transfer to freezer bags or an airtight container. They can last up to 3 months.
Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before cooking as per the recipe.
Tips
This is a really easy meatballs recipe. Here are some of my top tips to make sure they turn out perfect!
- For the most juicy meatballs, avoid over-mixing the meat mixture. Over-mixing can lead to dense and tough meatballs. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
- To achieve uniform-sized meatballs, consider using a cookie scoop or a small ice cream scoop. This ensures that all the meatballs cook evenly.
- If you prefer a lighter version, you can replace part of the beef with ground turkey. This swap won’t compromise the flavor but will cut down on the fat content.
- For extra surface flavor, consider browning the meatballs in a large skillet with a bit of olive oil before adding them to the slow cooker.
Ingredients
Though this isn’t the only way to make meatballs, through experience, I’ve found that it’s definitely my favorite way!
- Lean ground beef
- Italian sausage
- Breadcrumbs
- Grated parmesan cheese
- Eggs
- Minced onion
- Minced garlic
- Dried parsley
- Italian seasoning
- Salt and black pepper
