I mean, don’t get me wrong, my slow cooker pulled pork is super simple to make.
But it takes all day. So if I forget to get it in the cooker in the morning, we aren’t having that for dinner.
I have slowly been working on converting a lot of my slow cooker recipes over to make them in the pressure cooker & this is one of the first I just had to try.

Here are some commonly asked questions
CAN I USE ANOTHER FLAVOR OF SODA?
Yes, you absolutely can. This would be great with orange soda or root beer.
What you want to make sure of is that you do not use diet soda.
Not only does the carbonation help tenderize the meat & help in its ability to fall apart, but the syrup in the soda really helps give it the flavor you want when pairing it with BBQ sauce.
CAN I USE FROZEN PORK FOR THIS RECIPE?
Yes you can. Just increase the cooking time.
As a general rule, if you are cooking fresh pork at 20 minutes per pound, you will want to increase the time to 30 minutes per pound for frozen.
I was cooking 4 pounds & I cooked it for 90 minutes. But if I had been cooking a frozen pork, I would have increased it to 2 hours.

How cool to use the soda to make it!
Gina Kleinworth says
Not only does the syrup in the soda help with the flavor but the carbonation helps to really tenderize the meat.

Do you cut the roast up??
Gina Kleinworth says
HI Amber, I didn’t cut mine up, but you can definitely do that if you like so it fits better in your cooker.
Lisa says
OMG best recipe ever! So moist and yummy. I only made 2 lbs. f pork, but didn’t cut the recipe down. Put my dry ingredients in ziplock bag and tossed the pork for an hour before cooking. So tender. Keeping this for ever.
Kelley says
Any suggestions…. I have done everything you said to do for the recipe but I got a “burn” error! Help!
Gina Kleinworth says
Hmmm – that is so odd, it doesn’t usually happen for this type of recipe. Usually, when this happens it is because there isn’t enough liquid, the liquid is too thick or there is food stuck to the pot which keeps it from coming to the proper pressure. I would add more liquid, 1/2 cup – 1 cup water. Use a wooden spoon to scrape up any food that may have become stuck to the bottom of the pot. Then try cooking it again.
Shirley says
My first instant pot fail. I’ve done about 6 recipes so far, so I’m really new at this, but I followed recipe to a T and it cooked on one side and not the other. Looking back now, should have used a trivet to suspend meat over liquid for even cooking. Smelled good, will try again, but I’ll use a trivet this time.
Gina Kleinworth says
I’m sorry to hear that. But I’m curious what made it a “fail”. It would be a lot easier for me to know what went wrong & help if I knew more. The meat isn’t supposed to sear, it is supposed to become tender and fall apart, so I’m not sure what you mean by cooking on one side & not the other. That being said, it will brown on the bottom while it is cooking & that is okay. Leaving it in the liquid & the carbonation in the soda is part of what makes it tender & able to fall apart, so you don’t want to suspend the meat. Everything should be toss & go, without any special steps.
Pat says
Can you use diet Dr. Pepper?
Gina Kleinworth says
Yes – it will be a bit less sweet & have less caramelization to the liquid. But it won’t change the acid that helps break down the pork to make it tender.
Monica says
I have pork tenderloin, and not pork butt, on hand. Will that work? What changes would I need to make?
Gina Kleinworth says
It won’t really turn out as pulled meat. The cooking time will be drastically shorter. If you check my pork tenderloin posts you can use those instructions for your tenderloin but with the same sauce as this one. It will have to be sliced instead of pulled when serving.
Jennifer says
Omg it came out PERFECT! I think I’ve outdone myself with this one!
Michelle says
Will this work if the pork is not boneless?
Gina Kleinworth says
It will work fine – just increase the cooking time to 25 minutes per pound, instead of 20 for fresh.

i’ve got to make this. It looks and sounds so good. Just hope my addiction to Dr. Pepper doesn’t get in the way! 🙂
Sarah says
This sounds absolutely amazing. I just don’t have an instant pot, I was wondering if it would work in a slow cooker?
Courtney says
I was wondering this too. I have an instant pot, but was thinking of making this for a large crowd. If I could do one batch in the instant pot and one in the slow cooker,’it should make enough.
Gina Kleinworth says
You sure can make it in the slow cooker! It takes quite a bit longer – so just make sure you plan ahead. But it is still fabulous!
Just add the same ingredients in there & then follow these steps here that I have for Guinness Pulled Pork

Jamie says
Wonderful! How would you adjust the time for bone in?
Gina Kleinworth says
just increase the cooking time to 25 minutes per pound, instead of 20 for fresh.
Courtney says
Would this work with chicken breast instead for pulled chicken?
Gina Kleinworth says
I recommend using this recipe for Instant Pot pulled chicken using chicken breasts – https://www.kleinworthco.com/instant-pot-shredded-chicken/
