One thing I learned after 12 years of living in the desert, HYDRATION is absolutely key to so many parts of our lives! One of the most common things I’m asked is How to Stay Hydrated. Check out these tips that make it simple to get your recommended daily water intake & why water is so important if you are affected by a natural disaster.
Before moving up here to North Idaho, we spent a long time living in the Nevada desert. It was scorching HOT. I’m talking 100+ days over 100 degrees kind of hot. So, learning to stay hydrated had to become a way of life for us.
Importance of Staying Hydrated
Not only did we live in the desert, but at the same time my husband was in charge of all of the disaster preparedness for the county. We lived in the second largest county in the nation at 18,600 square miles. That is a lot of space and a lot to prepare for. So, these tips are coming straight from the disaster preparedness professionals.
Here are some commonly asked questions
What does water have to do with disaster preparedness?
Many people don’t think of this until it happens. When you are hit with a disaster, clean drinking water may not be available. Your regular water source very well could be cut-off or even compromised through things like contamination. It is so important to prepare yourself by building an adequate supply of water that will meet your family’s needs during an emergency.
How much water do I need to have on hand in the event of an emergency?
The general rule that we always tell people is to store at least one gallon of water per person per day for three days. So, if you have a family of 3, you need 9 gallons for the 3 days. This is for drinking & sanitation.
Now, you can get some of your water intake from foods, but the likelihood of having fresh fruits & vegetables available for this during a disaster is slim. So, having storage of water is key. Keep in mind that a normally active person needs about three-quarters of a gallon of fluid daily, from water and other beverages. Individual needs can vary, depending on age, health, physical condition, activity, diet & climate.
Remember that children, nursing mothers & sick people may need more water. In the event, you suffer a medical emergency during the disaster you might require additional water for that issue.
Of course, if you live in a warmer weather climate, it may be necessary to keep more water on hand. In very hot temperatures, water needs can double.
What are the benefits of staying hydrated?
- Water helps prevent dry mouth.
- Water keeps your body cool.
- Water helps muscles and joints work better.
- Water keeps skin supple & keeps the dry skin away.
- Water helps cleanse your body — inside and out.
How to Stay Hydrated
The easiest way to stay hydrated…
Get an in-home water dispenser & water from Primo® water. We choose Primo water because it goes through a multi-step purification process that includes reverse osmosis. This ensures that there are never any harmful contaminants in our drinking water. I can’t begin to express just how much this means for my family!
How do I stay hydrated if there is a loss of power?
This is a very important concern because the availability of clean water may be compromised. While I highly recommend our Primo water dispenser, it is operated with electricity. So now what? Fortunately, Primo has a manual water pump. This allows you to pump delicious Primo water from your 5-gallon bottle without the need for electricity. It’s so cool it’s already sold out on the Primo.com website, but it is available on the Walmart website.
I really love having this not only as part of our disaster preparedness plan, but it is great to take along with us on camping trips too. We can take with us just 2-3 bottles along with our pump instead of going through cases of individual bottles of water.

For years we had the water crock on the stand. It was HARD to not only lift but also flip that 5-gallon bottle without making a mess. This dispenser fits the bottle inside the bottom, making it simple & easy to change out the bottle when needed. I also really love that I can have hot, cold or room-temperature water on demand, making it really easy to enjoy a cup of tea whenever I want.
We have the Deluxe Bottom Loading Water Dispenser With Self-sanitization. Did you know that adding a water dispenser to your home results in families drinking 25% more water? I can attest – that is definitely true in our house.
We like to utilize the Exchange Water from Primo, making it easy to rotate the bottles as they empty & keeping multiple on hand to satisfy our disaster plan needs.
When you get your dispenser, you will receive a handy starter guide, which comes with coupons for free water bottles to really help you get your supply started. It couldn’t be easier.
