They can be cooked either in a traditional waffle maker or in a larger Belgian waffle maker. The result, however, is always tasty and satisfying. You can also change it up by adding vanilla or other extracts for new flavors.

Here are some commonly asked questions
What are waffles?
Waffles are a popular breakfast food that is usually served with honey, maple syrup, or butter. They can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. However – we love adding them to dessert too.
The first waffle irons were round and had a handle – to flip the waffle over once it was cooked on one side. They are similar in shape to today’s electric waffle makers, but they were less refined and often made from cast iron or other metal that is not non-stick.
Can this recipe be doubled?
You can, and we do it often when we have more people to feed. It might take a bit longer to make all of the waffle batter during the cooking process, but doubling works fine.
What is the best way to store leftover waffles?
Let the waffles cool completely. Then you can place a piece of parchment in between each one and either refrigerate or freeze until ready to enjoy again. They will keep in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Why Make Waffles at Home
Aside from not having to leave the house to get them – I love them for these reasons. First – If you make waffles at home, they will always be better than if they come from a factory.
Here’s why. When you prepare your batter at home you are adding all of nature’s essential nutrients like eggs, milk (rich with calcium & vitamin D), oil (healthy fats) to your recipe.
This creates a more nutritionally rich meal that makes you feel fuller for longer. Plus they contain less salt and preservatives.
ALSO – those store-bought waffles, even the ones with only a hint of artificial colors and flavorings, tend to be more expensive. Not only that – but after tasting these you’ll prefer them because they’re not overly sweetened and artificially flavored!
What to serve with waffles
- Fresh Berries
- Sliced Peaches
- Whipped Cream
- Confectioner’s Sugar
- Caramel Sauce
- Fruit Compote
- Ice Cream – when serving for dessert
How to keep waffles warm before serving
This can be tricky when making a lot of waffles – you want the first ones to still be hot when all of the batter has been made and you are ready to serve. To do this – set your oven to warm and place the cooked waffles on a baking sheet in the warm oven while you cook the remaining waffles.
I recommend waiting to add any butter until serving – if you add it when they come directly off of the waffle maker and it sits on the waffles for a period of time before serving – they tend to get a bit soggy. No one wants that.

How to make Homemade Waffles
- In a large bowl, add the flour, baking powder and salt, whisk to combine.
- Separate the eggs whites and the yolks into 2 separate bowls.
- Add the milk, egg yolks and the oil to the dry ingredients and whisk until smooth.
- In the other bowl with the egg white, whisk the egg whites until very foamy.
- Fold the egg whites into the waffle batter until incorporated, but don’t over beat.
- Heat the waffle iron and spray with non-stick cooking spray or cooking oil.
- Using a pourable measuring cup or ladle, fill the waffle iron with the batter.
- Cook the waffles for 5-8 minutes each or until golden brown, depending on the waffle maker.
- Remove from the waffle iron and serve immediately with syrup, confectioner’s sugar or fresh fruit.
Why are my waffles sticking to the waffle iron?
The first thing is to make sure the waffle iron is preheated. Adding the batter before the waffle iron is at full temperature causes the batter to cook too slowly instead of sort of searing the outside to create that crust.
The second issue could be not getting enough non-stick spray or cooking oil added before pouring the batter onto the iron. Make sure the whole thing- top and bottom – are evenly coated between making each waffle.
