Here are some commonly asked questions
Why you’ll love this recipe
- These chocolate-dipped pretzels are the perfect sweet and salty treat!
- They’re so easy to make and only require a few simple ingredients.
- They’re perfect for Halloween parties, or just as a fun snack to enjoy during the spooky season!
- The best part? You can customize them however you like, whether you want to go all out with Halloween decorations or keep it simple with just a few sprinkles.
Can this recipe be doubled?
You can, and we do it often. It might take a bit longer and you might want to work in batches when it comes to melting the chocolate – working portions of the bag each time.
Why didn’t my chocolate wafers melt correctly?
When your chocolate wafers become chunky rather than creamy, it is said that the chocolate seized. This is typically due to overheating or contact with water or steam.
In the first case, the chocolate is just burning from excess heat, but in the second case, there is a negative reaction between the chocolate (which is waxy and has many oils that are hydrophobic, or “water-fearing”) and the water, causing the components of the chocolate to separate.
Be sure to refer to the package directions when melting chocolate to prevent this from happening.

What Are the Best Melting Wafers?
- Merckens Milk Chocolate Wafers: These wafers are made with real milk chocolate, making them a delicious and rich option for dipping pretzels. They melt quickly and evenly, making them perfect for creating smooth, professional-looking dipped pretzels.
- Ghirardelli Melting Wafers: These wafers are also made with real milk chocolate, giving them a similar flavor to the Merckens wafers. They have a slightly thinner consistency, which can make them easier to work with when dipping pretzels.
- Wilton Candy Melts: These candy melts are available in a variety of colors, making them perfect for creating festive Halloween-themed pretzels. They have a creamy texture that melts smoothly, making them easy to work with.
- Nestle Toll House Morsels: These morsels are made with real chocolate and come in both milk and dark chocolate varieties. They melt quickly and evenly, making them ideal for dipping pretzels.
- Lindt Lindor Chocolate Truffles: These truffles are made with high-quality dark chocolate and have a smooth, creamy texture that melts easily when heated. They add a touch of luxury to any chocolate-dipped pretzel.

How to Make Halloween Pretzels
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- Next, add the white chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl and melt them in the microwave in 10-second increments. Stir in between each round until they are melted.
- Pour the melted chocolate into a mason jar or tall glass.
- Then, dip the end of one pretzel rod at a time into the melted chocolate. Tilt the jar and spin the pretzel rod until ⅔ of the pretzel is coated.
- Tap off any excess melted chocolate from the pretzel rod while it is in the jar until it stops dripping.
- Place the dipped pretzel onto the prepared parchment paper.
- Once the pretzels have been dipped, sprinkle the green, orange, and purple sprinkles over the coated pretzel rods while the chocolate is still wet and before the chocolate sets.
- Repeat steps 3-6 two more times until all of the pretzels have been dipped.
- Allow the decorated pretzels to set and dry.
Note – if using Nonpareils to decorate, there is a chance that they will sweat when refrigerated and the colors will bleed.
Variations
For an even sweeter treat, try dipping the pretzels in milk or dark chocolate instead of white chocolate.
Add a bit of extra crunch to your pretzels, try dipping them in candy-coated chocolates or sprinkling them with crushed nuts before the chocolate sets.
For a fun and festive twist, try using orange or green candy melts instead of the white chocolate.
Can I use sugar-free chocolate?
I haven’t tried using sugar-free chocolate. But I think that will work just fine. If you give it a try, please let me know how it turned out.
Notes for Making Chocolate Halloween Pretzels
- You can use any white chocolate/baking chips. I use Ghirardelli White Chocolate Chips, as it makes for a smoother consistency.
- The sprinkles can be found at any grocery store. The ones I selected are from Walmart.
- Make sure your pretzels are fresh. Old pretzels will not taste as good.
- If you can, use good quality chocolate for dipping. Cheap chocolate will not taste as good and may be more difficult to work with.
- Melt the chocolate slowly and carefully. If the chocolate is too hot, it will be difficult to work with and may seize up.
- Dip the pretzels into the chocolate one at a time, making sure each one is well coated.
- Place the dipped pretzels on a sheet of wax paper or parchment paper to cool and set up
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or a cool dry place for up to one week.
How to Store Halloween Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods
Because pretzels tend to get soggy when exposed to moist air (as you find in a refrigerator or freezer) I don’t recommend trying to refrigerate or freeze these pretzel rods. Just place them in an airtight container and keep them at room temperature.
Do keep in mind that depending on the age of the candy melts and your climate – the chocolate may bloom (look like it has a white film on it) after a period of time.
While it is unappealing – there is actually nothing wrong with the chocolate and it is still fine and safe to eat.
