I’m so excited – it’s time to kick off the ultimate fall festivities – Halloween. I have once again joined some of my super amazing friends for the 5th annual 30 Days of Halloween.
That means Halloween recipes overload over at my friend Alli’s place. I’m jumpin’ in with these SUPER CUTE Ghoulish Monster Halloween Cupcakes that will be the life of your celebrations.
Great for a spooky Halloween party or just to give the kiddos a little smile when they get back from traipsing the neighborhood.

I love these because no matter your skill level, anyone can make them. You can just whipped up a quick & easy box of cake mix to the package directions.
I happened to already have the frosting on hand from another cake I had made. But you could just as easily use the canned variety if you didn’t want to make some. Then you just need the candy eyes & the gel glaze – links for those below.
I mean, just look at how cute they are. I love the expressions you can give them with the right placement of the eyes.
You really can’t beat how simple these cupcakes are & yet I know they will bring lots of raving fans at any party you bring them to. Just think how fun these would be at a class Halloween party.

Ghoulish Monster Halloween Cupcakes
Ingredients
Cake
- 1 box cake mix + additional ingredients per box instructions eggs, oil, water
Frosting
- ½ cup salted butter – softened
- ½ cup shortening
- 8 cups confectioners sugar (no sifting) 1-2 pound bag
- 2 tsp clear vanilla extract
- ⅓ cup milk depending on how thick you want the frosting
Decorate
- 1 package candy eyes
- 1 tube RED gel glaze icing
Instructions
- Mix, prepare & bake cupcakes to package directions
- Cool completely on wire rack & prepare frosting
Frosting
- Cream softened butter & shortening in stand mixer with paddle attachment until smooth.
- Blend in vanilla.
- Add ½ the confectioners sugar & most of the milk – stir slowly until moist- then whip until well combined.
- Add remaining confectioners sugar & milk.
- Beat on med-high about 3-4 minutes scraping sides of the bowl occasionally.
- The texture should be very smooth.
Decorate
- Using a large open star tip, pipe frosting in a swirl pattern on top of cupcakes
- Squeeze gel icing over the top & let it drip down the sides
- Add eyes at random all over the frosting
