What are Ghosts in the Graveyard Dessert?
This spooky and delicious dessert is perfect for any Halloween party! It’s made with a chocolate pudding base and topped with a layer of Oreo crumbs. Finally, it’s topped with tombstone cookies, gummy worms, and ghosts made from whipped topping!

To store your leftover Ghosts in the Graveyard Dessert, simply place them in an airtight container and refrigerate them for up to 3 days. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, simply remove them from the fridge and enjoy!
Ingredients for Ghosts in the Graveyard Dessert
- instant chocolate pudding mix
- cold milk
- whipped topping – thawed – part of one for decorations
- Oreo cookies crumbs
Decorations
- Milano cookies
- chocolate-covered graham crackers
- gummy worms
- chocolate almond bark – to make trees optional
- black writing gel
- white writing gel or confectioner’s sugar and milk **see instructions
- candy eyes for ghosts
Do I have to use Whipped Topping?
This can be made with homemade stabilized whipped cream. But this recipe won’t work with regular whipped cream. It needs to be stabilized so that it won’t turn the pudding into a soup and the ghosts will hold their shape.
How to serve Ghosts in the Graveyard
- large glass bowl
- 9×13 pan
- individual serving cups – as shown here
How to Make Ghosts in the Graveyard Dessert
Pudding Base
- In a large bowl, whisk together the pudding mix and milk until smooth.
- Place the bowl in the refrigerator to set, for about 10 minutes.
- Remove from the refrigerator and fold in the whipped topping.
- Place it back in the refrigerator to chill for about 10-15 minutes (longer is fine).
- Create the decorations while the pudding mixture is chilling **instructions below.
- Divide the pudding mixture into serving dishes or a 9×13 glass dish **see notes.
- Add 6-8 Oreo cookies to the food processor and crush them into crumbs.
- Sprinkle the cookie crumbs over the pudding mixture and then add the decorations you have created.
Trees
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Add 2-3 blocks of the almond bark to a microwave-safe bowl.
- Heat in the microwave for 1 minute, remove and stir.
- Continue cooking for 10-20 seconds at a time until the chocolate is almost melted. Stir until completely melted and smooth.
- Transfer the chocolate to a plastic decorator bag or resealable bag and snip off a very small amount of the tip of the bag .
- Create the trees by piping melted chocolate onto the parchment paper.
- Let set for 10-15 minutes or until hardened.
Tombstones
- For the white frosting for writing, mix together 1 cup confectioner’s sugar and about 1-2 teaspoons of milk until smooth. You need the frosting to be very thick so begin with a very small amount of milk and gradually add a tiny bit at a time until the consistency is good for writing.
- Write years and/or RIP on the Milano cookies or chocolate-covered graham crackers.
Decorate
- Add decorations to pudding mixtures.
- Add gummy worms if you like.
Ghosts
- Place a portion of the whipped topping in a piping bag fitted with a round tip.
- Pipe the whipped topping into a ghost shape on top of the assembled graveyard.
- Once piped – gently press the candy eyes on the ghosts OR you can use the remaining melted chocolate in the piping bag to pipe on the face of the ghosts.
Can this be made ahead of time?
Ghosts in the Graveyard Dessert can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge until you’re ready to serve it. Simply prepare the base pudding portion of the dessert as directed, then add a layer of plastic wrap on top and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days.
When you’re ready to serve, simply remove it from the fridge, and add the toppings fresh! I don’t recommend adding the crumbs, cookies, or gummy worms before storing them in the fridge. Those ingredients don’t keep well in the refrigerator.
Reasons to love Ghosts in the Graveyard Dessert
- kid-friendly
- can be made ahead
- can be made with a variety of flavors to change it up – try all your favorite candies

Can this be made with cook and serve pudding?
I suppose you can do that if that is all you can find. The pudding will need to be completely cooked, cooled, and chilled before you can proceed to add the whipped topping.
