Fried Pickle Dip Ingredients Notes & Substitutions
My creamy pickle dip is based on a mix of cream cheese, mayo, and sour cream, with added pickle relish, and dill, and topped with panko breadcrumbs. In total, there are only 10 very simple ingredients.
I don’t use ranch seasoning or sauce in my recipe. Fried pickle and ranch dip has all the same ingredients plus ranch seasoning and dressing, that’s all the difference.
Dip Ingredients
- Cream cheese in a tub, softened (room temperature), or whipped cream cheese. It is the creamy secret of this velvety dip. You can use any fat content.
- Sour cream. You can also use half of sour cream and half of plain Greek yogurt
- Mayonnaise adds to the creaminess and has some salty tang. But if you don’t have it, use just sour cream and cream cheese in a 1:2 ratio. You can also substitute mayo with Ranch dressing mix.
- Dill pickle relish. Store-bought or homemade. It is a shortcut in case you don’t have pickles on hand. You can also use diced dill pickles and a splash of pickle juice for a strong pickle flavor and satisfying crunch. Make sure to use only dill pickles, not other varieties. Also, make sure they are sturdy and crunchy! Save some additional chopped pickles for garnish.
- Garlic powder. If you really love garlicky dips, you can use finely minced fresh garlic. If you don’t want a powerful garlic kick, stick to the powder.
- Onion powder. Mild onion flavor and easy to combine in a smooth dip. Garlic and onion powder can be substituted with Ranch seasoning (which is basically onion and garlic powder, dill, chives, parsley, sea salt, and black pepper).
- Fresh dill weed. Dill has amazing aromas and refreshing flavor and really stands out with its light crunch in the dip.
- Kosher salt and pepper to taste. Freshly ground pepper is best. Mustard seeds are an amazing pungent add-on to this dip as well.
Topping
- Panko bread crumbs. Toasted panko is better! It only takes a few minutes and the same ingredients (butter and panko) so I really recommend doing it. Regular breadcrumbs don’t work as well as Panko crumbs in this recipe.
- Melted butter. Simply melt it in a microwave. Do not use oil to toast or combine breadcrumbs. Salted butter is best to use, but taste the dip before adding the topping to make sure you didn’t oversalt it.
Kitchen Equipment
- Serving Bowl
- Optional, mixer to thoroughly mix the cream cheese, sour cream, and mayo base of the dip.
- Optional, medium skillet to toast panko crumbs.
How To Make Fried Pickle Dip
Mix The Dip In A Bowl
- Combine the cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise in a medium bowl. Mix together until smooth.
- Stir in the dill pickle relish.
- Add the garlic powder, onion powder, and chopped fresh dill. Mix well.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour covered with plastic wrap to allow flavors to blend.
Make The Panko Breadcrumbs Topping
- Before serving, combine the panko breadcrumbs with the melted butter.
- Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top of the dip.
- Garnish with additional pickles slices, chopped pickles, fresh chives, or seasonings, if desired.
Serving
Serve this delicious dip in a bowl, chilled with your choice of dippers at your next party:
- chips, like classic potato chips or pita chips, cassava chips, or kettle chips. Good old French fries too.
- crackers, like Ritz crackers.
- fresh veggies, like bell pepper slices, carrot sticks or baby carrots, and cucumber sticks.
- breadsticks, baguette slices, or pretzels.
- chicken tenders or nuggets, or breaded mozzarella sticks.
- it goes well like an appetizer spread in sandwiches and burgers too!
Storage
Storing. Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for 5-7 days.
Make ahead. You can easily make and combine the dip ahead of time, but only add panko crumbs 1 day before the party.
Freezing. This dip is great for freezing and can be stored in a freezer-safe container for 1 month.
How To Make Toasted Breadcrumbs
- Melt butter in a skillet on medium-low heat. Add panko crumbs, stirring, to make sure they are fully coated in butter.
- For extra pickle flavor, you can add a splash of pickle juice to the pan.
- Toast panko until all the crumbs are golden brown, for about 3-4 minutes. Use fried panko to generously top the dip or use half of the fried panko in the dip and the remaining panko for the topping.
- They are quite easy to burn, so keep stirring and keep the heat low.
Tips To Make The Best Pickle Dip
- Do you know what else goes well in this dip? Crispy bacon bits.
- Pickle juice can come in handy to thin the dip if it is too thick once you combine all the ingredients.
- If you want to add some heat, use red pepper flakes, cajun, or sliced jalapenos.
- Do not skip the part about softened cream cheese. It has to be softened because otherwise, the dip will have chunks of unmixed cream cheese instead of a perfect creamy texture. It only takes around 30 min to an hour for cream cheese to soften on the kitchen counter.
- The fried pickle dip can be watery if you are using chopped dill pickles. You need to pat them dry with paper towels to avoid that.
- A tiny splash of lemon juice add some freshness.
- To make vegan fried pickle dip, use dairy-free sour cream and cream cheese, and vegan butter.
- You can make this dip not only creamy but cheesy – stir in some grated mild cheddar.
