This crab rangoon dip is a creamy and savory dip that is packed with crab, cheesy gooey texture, and various savory deep flavors.
Party dips are my favorite part of any game or movie night and this tasty dip with crab meat, cheese, chili sauce, and creamy base has an edge to it!
Gina’s Recipe Rundown:
Texture: creamy crab goodness with cheesy golden perfection on top and tender crab meat inside.
Taste: cheesy, refreshing, tangy, sweet and spicy. It is one of those melt-in-your-mouth dips that you end up craving again and again.
Ease: Foolproof recipe: mix and bake, no kitchen equipment or chilling required.
Why I love it: I love Crab Rangoon Dip for its irresistible creamy texture, savory crab flavor, and the perfect balance of tangy and cheesy goodness that makes it a party favorite.
The dip is actually inspired by a classic crab rangoon dish which is a type of puffs or crispy dumplings filled with crab meat and cream cheese. They are one of the staples of American Asian cuisine and if you haven’t tried them, you are missing out!
The best tip for making a crab rangoon dip though is to add a little bit of mozzarella cheese and sour cream to have that ultra-rich, thick and creamy dip that is actually savory and filling. I’ll show you exactly what ingredient I put in my family’s favorite dip.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- You will absolutely love crab rangoon dip for its creamy goodness and flavors. There is no doubt about it!
- It is a unique dip, easy to make – it is a crowd favorite on game day.
- Homemade tastes better than Chinese takeout. Plus, you can finally have an excuse to try homemade crispy wonton chips.
- Super easy to make ahead and keep refrigerated until ready to bake or serve.
- Well, let’s face it, who will not love a dip with cream cheese?
Ingredients Notes
- Crab meat. Fresh lump crab meat, refrigerated crab meat, canned crab meat, or imitation crab meat is fine. The fresh crab meat is, of course, the best, if you can find and afford it. Make sure to rinse and drain it to avoid making a watery dip.
- Shredded mozzarella cheese
- Cream cheese softened. Room-temperature cream cheese is best to use to avoid lumps. We need brick-style cream cheese like Philadelphia.
- Mayonnaise + Sour cream make an amazing creamy base for the dip and the two balance out each other tang and saltiness. As you can see I have no added salt in the recipe, as I don’t need to!
- Worcestershire sauce for deeper flavors. You can use rice vinegar instead too.
- Scallions can be folded into the mix and used for garnish.
- Minced garlic or garlic powder for a light garlicky punch.
- Sweet chili sauce for garnish.
Kitchen Equipment
How To Make Crab Rangoon Dip
1: Combine All The Ingredients
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Grease a 9×9 baking dish with cooking spray. Set aside.
- Combine the crab meat, mozzarella, softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, scallions, and minced garlic in a large mixing bowl until well-mixed.
- You can save up some mozzarella cheese for topping.
2: Bake The Crab Dip
- Transfer to the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese (optional).
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until melted and bubbly.
- Top with the sweet chili sauce and additional sliced green onions for garnish and serve immediately.
What To Serve With Crab Rangoon Dip
Serve warm with:
- Breadsticks, crackers, chips, tortilla chips, fried egg roll wrappers, or crispy homemade wonton chips or strips like classic crab rangoon.
- Even veggies work! Cucumber, celery, carrot, zucchini, and bell pepper sticks.
Homemade Wonton Chips Recipe
To make crispy wonton chips, grab store-bought wonton wrappers, cut wonton wrappers stacked in half diagonally, layer them evenly on the baking sheet, and bake them in the oven for 2-3 minutes at 375 degrees F, or fry them in a saucepan in hot oil (around 350 degrees F), or in an air fryer.
While cutting the wonton wrappers, make sure to keep the rest of them under plastic wrap.
I love to bake them to avoid deep frying and using lots of oil, but you can also make air-fried wonton chips.
Storage
Keep leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Make crab rangoon dip ahead 1 day before and bake before serving.
Substitutions & Variations
- Jazz up flavors with Siracha, lime juice (or lemon juice), ginger, freshly ground black pepper, and soy sauce. It will have even more Asian notes to it.
- If you want the crab rangoon dip on the sweeter side, simply add some sugar, but sweet chili sauce has enough sweetness to it, in my opinion.
- You can add more cheese. Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Parmesan will be great.
- To make it even more Asian, sprinkle some sesame seeds as topping.
Expert Tips To Make The Best Crab Rangoon Dip
- If you want a golden brown top on the dip, broil it for 2-3 minutes uncovered at the end of the cooking time.
- You can make a crab rangoon dip recipe in a slow cooker. Simply load all the ingredients and cook on low for 3-4 hours.
- If you want an extra smooth dip, I recommend using an electric mixer to beat the mayo, cream cheese, and sour cream together.
