With the holiday season upon us, I thought I better get going on some new cocktail recipes. It has been a while since I shared one here, but the holiday season is the perfect time.
One recipe I have been itching to make since it exploded in popularity – a Moscow Mule. But we added a seasonal twist on the flavors for this one adding cinnamon spice.

Have you ever had a mule drink before? They are incredibly popular with people loving ginger beer.
For me, I’m all about the cute little copper mugs. I mean really, how adorable to enjoy your cocktail out of something as charming as that!
Moscow Mule Cocktail
Now a traditional Moscow Mule already has some spice with the ginger beer. But adding the cinnamon just gives it that holiday feel.
I decided to keep the traditional lime garnish but leave out the mint in exchange for the cinnamon sticks – so you know that this isn’t your average mule cocktail.
Here are some commonly asked questions
What is a Moscow Mule?
Often called a vodka buck, a Moscow mule is a cocktail made with vodka, spicy ginger beer, and lime juice, garnished with a slice or wedge of lime and mint.
This cocktail is popularly served in the iconic copper mug, which gets extremely cold when filled with a cold beverage.
How many can this serve?
This recipe is written per glass, however, the cinnamon syrup in the recipe should make about 8 ounces. Since each cup only calls for just under an ounce, you should be able to get about 8 servings from the syrup.
Moscow Mule Vodka
Can I use ginger ale instead of ginger beer?
Yes, absolutely, that will work just fine. Using ginger ale instead will tone down the spice in this drink.
HOW DO YOU MAKE Cinnamon Spiced Moscow Mule?
- Combine the water, brown sugar, and cinnamon sticks in a small saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil and cook until the sugar has fully dissolved— about 3-5 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and set aside to steep for about 30 minutes.
- Remove the cinnamon sticks and carefully transfer the syrup to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
To Make the Cocktail
- In the bottom of a copper mule mug, stir together the vodka, cinnamon syrup, St. Ger-main, and lime juice.
- Fill the glass with ice and then top with ginger beer.
- Garnish with a slice of lime and cinnamon stick. Serve immediately.
Moscow Drink
Can I use a sugar substitute?
I have not personally tried it, so I can’t say how that would turn out. But if you would like to try it, I suggest a product that offers a 1:1 swap. Please let me know how it turns out.
To make Cinnamon Spiced Moscow Mule you will need…
- water
- brown sugar
- cinnamon sticks
- vodka
- Elderflower liquor or syrup *optional but encouraged
- lime juice
- ginger beer or to taste
- lime and cinnamon stick to garnish
Can I use a vodka substitute?
I have heard of people using rum in place of the vodka at times. You can also turn this into an Irish Mule by using whiskey.
Can I make this non-alcoholic?
Sure you can. Just replace the vodka with club soda & the elderflower liquor with elderflower syrup. Also, be sure to get non-alcoholic ginger beer since that can contain up to 0.5% alcohol.
Products I love when making a Moscow Mule…
This Russian Mule recipe is SUPER EASY and delicious – and if you’re like me this time of year, then you maybe already have some of these items on hand OR maybe you have never made a mule drink before, & you might be a bit nervous – but you’re going to love it. I have made a list below of the things I absolutely can’t live without when it comes to making this cocktail recipe.
- brown sugar
- cinnamon sticks
- elderflower liquor or syrup
- lime juice
- ginger beer
- ginger ale
- copper mugs
- saucepan
Can this be made without the copper mug?
Moscow Mule cocktails are best in the copper mug because of how the copper conducts the energy created with the ice and makes the drink ultra COLD.
You can of course make this in a standard lowball glass, but it won’t give the full effect of a mule drink.
