Cinnamon Coffee Cake, just like breakfast at grandma’s, pairs perfectly with morning coffee. That ripple of cinnamon through the middle is a crowd pleaser.
Growing up we used to go visit extended family on the weekends. Almost every single time there would be some sort of treat for us to enjoy when we got there. One of my favorites, this Cinnamon Coffee Cake.
I really looked forward to those goodies & vowed I would make similar treats often when I had my own family. I am happy to say that I kept my promise to myself & make snack cakes & coffee cakes as often as I can. They are always a highlight in our week.
One coffee cake recipe we make a lot around here is this cinnamon coffee cake. You see, most of the people in our family have a serious addiction to cinnamon. They just can’t get enough of cinnamon flavored recipes & this one tops the list for most requested.

Can I add a streusel on top of this cake?
Yes, that would be delicious. I didn’t add it on this one because I was recreating our family recipe. However, we often do add a streusel on top. Use 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup brown sugar (packed), 1/4 cup quick oats (not instant), 1/8 teaspoon salt & 4 tablespoons butter, at firm room temperature. Whisk together the flour, sugar, oats, and salt. Work in the butter, mixing until coarse crumbs form & then sprinkle over the top of the cake before baking.
Do you recommend this as a gift for the neighbors?
This Cinnamon Coffee Cake makes a fabulous gifts for all your friends & neighbors. We like to pick up these disposable containers for gift giving. This is especially great on a Friday afternoon so they can have it to enjoy first thing on Saturday morning. You could also just use the reuseable dish & make that part of the gift.
Can this recipe be doubled?
I have never tried this. If you decide to do so, I think it would probably work to mix the double-quantity batter & then divide between 2 pans & just have 2 coffee cakes. I don’t recommend doubling the batter & then baking in one larger dish. This would change the baking time & possibly dry out the edges while trying to get the center to bake.
Can this recipe be halved?
Cutting this recipe in half would drastically change the baking time. For the best possible result, it would be better to make the recipe as it is written & then freeze whatever portion you won’t use immediately.
Can this recipe be frozen?
Yes, this coffee cake can be frozen. Just bake according to the recipe instructions & then portion out whatever you aren’t going to enjoy within 2-3 days. Then just wrap the cake in plastic wrap & then with foil. Make sure to label with the date before putting in the freezer. Use within 2-3 months.
How can I reheat this cake?
Just place your slice on a microwave-safe plate & microwave for about 30 seconds. If you are reheating after it has been refrigerated, then you will want to microwave for 60-90 seconds.
Why isn’t there coffee in coffee cake?
The name coffee cake doesn’t actually refer to the ingredients or the flavor of the cake. It is more in reference to what you are supposed to pair it with – coffee. This cake is meant to be enjoyed with your morning coffee and it absolutely compliments it so well.
