Super easy rolo pretzel bites for Christmas snacks and gifts with salty pretzels, sweet Rolo candies, M&M candies, and holiday sprinkles.
Every year the holiday season makes our to-do list grow exponentially day by day. We need simple gifts for school teachers and parents, colleagues, and loads of snacks for kids and visiting family. Our hands are full!
Making a whole batch of rolo pretzels sounds like an amazing idea. This is my version of the classic recipe, and I also have sandwiched pretzel bites.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- 4 Simple ingredients that are available in all grocery stores to make this sweet and salty treat. Barely any prep time too, and the baking time is a joke – 2 minutes! If it’s not a definition of an easy treat I don’t know what is!
- In such a small treat we have a burst of flavors and different textures: crunchy pretzels are salty and kinds savory, rolos soften and add a rich caramel taste, and M&Ms have a crunchy coating and also sweet chocolate taste. It is a bite-sized dream of every sweet tooth.
- It is so much fun to make these easy treats with kids! The hardest part for kids is to wait until all the pretzel bites are cooled.
- Mess-free. There is not much clean-up after making these Christmas treats.
- The best part? A large batch of these tasty treats ends up being very affordable.
Ingredients Notes
- Dark salted caramel Rolo candy or any caramel candy of choice. Note that hard candy will take much longer to soften in the oven, Kraft may take up to 15 minutes. One bag of Rolo candies will be enough if it is a big size (a family bag should work). We use one rolo to top each pretzel so the ratio is 1:1.
- Pretzel snaps (or mini pretzels like twists or round waffle pretzels). Snaps are those square pretzels. Get a bigger package, as you may need additional pretzel snaps. Some will be broken or we will break them while handling them (it is normal).
- Red and green M&M’s. Colorful M&M candies are a great addition, green M&M and red M&M are the best for the Christmas season. You can eat the rest, I’m sure kids would be thrilled to help you with that part.
- Holiday nonpareil sprinkles for an easy Christmas vibe.
Kitchen Equipment
- Baking tray/cookie sheet with parchment paper
How To Make Christmas Rolo Pretzel Bites
- Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Arrange pretzels on a baking sheet in a single layer.
- Add one unwrapped Rolo to the top of each pretzel.
- Bake for 2-3 minutes in the preheated oven – just enough to soften the Rolo, you don’t want it to melt or flatten.
- Remove and immediately decorate by pressing a single M&M into the top of each Rolo, then add sprinkles – working quickly so that everything sets into the melted chocolate and caramel before they firm up again.
- Let set at room temperature for at least 20 minutes to set before serving or storing. It is best to let them cool completely before serving or packing (in case you’re preparing for a cookie exchange.
Storing
Store rolo pretzels (if you have any leftovers!) in an airtight container on the counter for up to one week or max 2 weeks.
You may also refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.
Substitutions & Different Variations
- You can use any variety of Rolo or even change it up by using a mini peanut butter cup (it will make peanut butter pretzel bites then), caramel square, or other gooey caramel candy.
- Change up the toppings to whatever you desire based on the type of celebration or holiday, you can use Reese’s pieces, white chocolate, colorful holiday-themed sprinkles, and even make reindeer rolo pretzels with super cute pretzel antlers.
- Instead of pretzel snaps, you can use mini twists, pretzel waffles (circle pretzels), pretzel crisps, or pretzel flats.
- Hershey kisses make a perfect addition. Chocolate candies with pretzels are another great sweet and salty combination to die for. Add one Hershey’s kiss at the center of each pretzel.
- Rolo Pretzel Turtles are usually made with pecan halves. You can also use crunchy pecans in this recipe by alternating M&Ms with pecans. Place a pecan half on top of the Rolo candy. You can do a third of the batch with pecan halves, 1/3 with red M&Ms, and the remaining portion with green M&Ms.
- Dip them in chocolate. Melt milk, dark chocolate, or white chocolate chips and dip half of rolo pretzel treats in it.
- Without festive decorations, these pretzel rolo treats can just be an easy dessert for weekly school lunch boxes.
Expert Tips To Make Rolo Pretzels
- Save yourself time and buy unwrapped Rolos. Although unwrapping caramel rolos is a great activity for kids, it can also mean you have to wait for them to do it which is not always time-efficient, if we are honest…
- This recipe halves, or doubles easily – depending on your needs.
- For guests with celiac disease, you can make a gluten-free yummy treat (or a small batch) – Snyder’s has gluten-free pretzels and Rolos are already gluten-free.
- To pack each holiday gift use small plastic or cloth gift bags and red ribbon.
- Do not skip parchment paper. Line the prepared baking sheet with it or with a silicone mat before you place pretzels to make sure the caramel will not stick to the bottom of the pan if it melts.
