Common Questions About Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Turkeys
Can I use wax paper instead of parchment paper?
Absolutely! Either parchment paper or wax paper works fine to line your baking sheet. Just make sure your strawberries don’t stick! It also helps the cleanup afterward. You’re bound to get a little melted chocolate here and there all over your pan haha.
How do the mini marshmallows fit into the recipe?
The mini marshmallows are used to create the “legs” of your turkey, attached to the side of the strawberry with pretzel sticks. Cute and chewy!
Do I need a microwave to melt the chocolate?
While our recipe uses a microwave-safe bowl to melt the chocolate, you can also use a double boiler method if you prefer that. Do what feels the best for you!
Storage
These little Thanksgiving turkeys are my kid’s favorite thing. I think they like looking at them even more than they enjoy eating them. Chances are, they’ll be playing with them and “walking” them along their plates, haha!
Refrigerator
To enjoy these sweet treats at their best, have them the same day. But if you’ve got leftovers, pop them into an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for 1-2 days.
Freezer
While you can freeze these, the strawberries might get a bit mushy upon thawing. Best to enjoy them fresh!
Tips
Be sure to let the kids gobble up any of the excess chocolate drip. Ok… maybe the adults want to do that too. Just enjoy the process! These turkeys are a great way to make memories in the kitchen.
- Skewers are Key: Use cocktail skewers as they’re stronger and longer than toothpicks, ensuring your strawberry doesn’t fall during the dipping process.
- Choosing Your Chocolate: Melting wafers are preferred, but you can also use milk chocolate chips or chocolate bark. Remember to use a deep bowl or large-rimmed cup for easy dipping.
- Consistency Matters: If your chocolate becomes too thick, you can thin it out with a teaspoon of coconut oil for a silky, smooth dip.

How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberry Turkeys
Don’t worry if these don’t come out absolutely “perfect”. I think we tend to focus too much on that in the kitchen. Have fun with it! These cute strawberry turkey treats will turn out great, no matter what.
Prep
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Rinse the strawberries thoroughly and pat them dry with a paper towel. Then, press a cocktail skewer vertically into the top of each strawberry, but do not go all the way through.
- Break each pretzel stick in half. Add 2 mini marshmallows to each broken end of the pretzel stick.
- Microwave the chocolate melting wafers in a deep bowl for 30 seconds on defrost. Remove from the microwave and stir until completely melted. If needed, return to the microwave for 15 additional seconds to melt the remaining chocolate wafers.
Assemble
- To assemble the turkey, dip one side of a marshmallow pretzel stick in the chocolate and attach it to the side of a strawberry (this will be the turkey’s wing). Hold the marshmallow stick against the strawberry for 10-15 seconds, then repeat on the other side of the strawberry with another marshmallow pretzel stick and chocolate. Place the assembled strawberries on the baking sheet.
- Put the strawberries in the refrigerator for 5 minutes to allow the chocolate to harden.
- Reheat the chocolate for 15 seconds on the defrost setting if needed. Then, dip each strawberry into the chocolate until the chocolate reaches the stem. Remove the strawberry from the chocolate and gently jiggle to drip the excess chocolate off. Place back on the baking sheet and repeat the process with all 12 strawberries.
- Allow the strawberries to harden in the refrigerator for 5 minutes.
- Melt the white chocolate in a small bowl. Remove the strawberries from the refrigerator, then dip the very tip of each pretzel in the white chocolate.
- Return the strawberries to the refrigerator for 5 additional minutes, then serve and enjoy!

I recommend using cocktail skewers since they are typically longer and stronger than a toothpick. This will ensure your strawberry does not fall off while dipping into the chocolate. If you only have toothpicks, use two per strawberry for a stronger hold.
