Easy crockpot chicken and gravy recipe for a comforting meal on a busy weeknight. Lush and rich gravy and juicy tender chicken best served with mashed potatoes.
You can make chicken gravy on the stove or in an instant pot, but the secret to making the juiciest breasts in rich savory gravy is to go with a slow cooking process!
Gina’s Recipe Rundown:
Texture: I absolutely love how tender this chicken gets after slow cooking. And the gravy is very rich and creamy.
Taste: Chicken is juicy and perfectly seasoned with some garlicky flavor, but the star of the show is the flavorful gravy, of course!
Ease: this is a super easy recipe, you literally don’t have to do anything!
Why I love it: I love this on Sunday or on a long day when I need some comfort food.
Comfort food comes in many shapes and forms, but when it comes with gravy, I make a double batch of this crock pot chicken as I know the whole family will ask for seconds and I can use that gravy for anything else.
It is one of my favorite slow cooker recipes for days I don’t want to think about dinner or dishes.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Dump-and-go crockpot recipe! Prep time is barely 5 minutes.
- Big hearty family dinner with amazing leftovers for the next day.
- Affordable great recipe year-round.
- My family loved it every time I made it, so I can guarantee it can satisfy even picky eaters.
Ingredients Notes
- Boneless skinless chicken breasts. I use about 4 large breasts. Frozen chicken meat works too, just increase the cooking time and make sure to check the internal temperature of the chicken to decide whether it is done.
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. I highly recommend being very careful with salt as so many ingredients in this recipe are salty.
- Onion or onion powder
- Minced garlic or garlic powder
- Condensed cream of chicken soup. Homemade or store-bought like Campbell’s. Low-sodium will be a better, healthier, option.
- Chicken broth. I would go with low-sodium chicken broth, if possible. You can use beef or vegetable broth in a pinch.
- Chicken gravy mix (low sodium). Use the one in the gravy packets, not canned gravy. Gluten-free mixes are available too.
- Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
Kitchen Equipment
- 7-quart slow cooker. You can use a liner for easier clean-up.
- 2 forks
- Optional, meat thermometer
- Freezer-safe containers for storage
How To Make Chicken And Gravy Crock Pot Recipe
Making chicken and gravy in a slower cooker is super easy, we just need to load all the ingredients and patiently wait for them to slow cook. No other kitchen appliances or complex cooking methods are required.
1: First, Load The Chicken
- Prepare the cooker insert by spraying it with cooking oil to prevent sticking.
- Place the chicken in the bottom of the cooker in an even layer.
- Season with salt and pepper and then add the onions and garlic on top.
2: Add The Gravy Ingredients
Combine the condensed soup with the broth and gravy mix in a large mixing bowl, whisking until the powder has dissolved. Pour the mixture over the top of the seasoned chicken.
3: Slow Cook
- Cover and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours – it should be fork tender. Don’t overcook. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken – it should be at 165F when it is done and safe to consume.
- Once cooked through, remove and shred into pieces with two forks. Add shredded chicken back into the slow cooker.
- Garnish and serve as desired.
Serving Suggestions
I love to serve chicken and gravy over mashed potatoes or rice.
- You can use white, brown rice, or cauliflower rice.
- Steamed or stir fry veggies like green beans, broccoli, and corn.
- Egg noodles are great for gravy, as gravy coats them perfectly and makes them super saucy.
- Some garlic bread or dinner rolls to dip into the creamy gravy.
If you are making extra gravy you can serve it in a separate bowl for dipping.
Storage
Store any leftover chicken and gravy in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
You can freeze chicken with gravy for up to 3 months.
Thaw overnight and reheat in a saucepan.
You can use this slow cooker chicken recipe for meal prep too. Simply portion raw chicken and gravy in freezer-safe bags and freeze for 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and cook as instructed.
Substitutions & Variations
- Chicken thighs or chicken tenderloins can be substituted as well as turkey breasts or tenderloins. Turkey and even pork will go well with the gravy too.
- Add veggies to the slow cooker: celery, carrots, mushrooms, and potatoes (regular or sweet), to bulk up the dish. It won’t affect the cooking time unless you’re using frozen vegetables.
- For extra flavor, you can add Worcestershire sauce, dried parsley, and more spices.
- You can make it spicy too by simply adding some hot sauce and spicy peppers in seasoning.
- Serve with white rice, a side of green beans, or cranberry sauce.
Expert Tips To Make The Best Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy
- Add ¾ cup of sour cream or heavy cream to the cooker when cooking to make the gravy creamier.
- Add cornstarch to thicken the gravy mixture
- To increase the gravy, an additional can of soup and gravy packet can be added.
- Low-sodium versions of the soup and gravy will work in this recipe. Do not add more water or swap soup with water.
- For creamier gravy, slow cooker chicken will greatly benefit from some dairy: sour cream, heavy cream, or plain Greek yogurt.
Popular Questions
Is It Ok To Put Raw Chicken In A Slow Cooker?
Yes, you can cook raw chicken in a crock pot. It is safe and the dish will turn out flavorful and not watery.
I do not recommend putting frozen chicken in the slow cooker as it will not be held at a safe temperature for a while during the cooking process, which causes bacteria to grow. Please use fresh chicken.
How To Thicken Chicken Gravy In A Crock Pot?
You can prepare a cornstarch slurry in a small bowl and add it to the gravy in the slow cooker. Cornstarch, flour, and tapioca are natural thickening agents, but slow cooking will also naturally thicken the sauce.
Should I Brown The Chicken Before Adding To The Slow Cooker?
Searing the chicken before slow cooking is super optional. The cooking time on low or on high is enough for even frozen chicken to cook through and be tender and juicy.
Does Chicken Need To Be Covered In Liquid In Crockpot?
No, you don’t have to submerge the chicken fully in cooking liquids in the crockpot, but you should keep the lid closed.
