Here are some commonly asked questions
Can I use another flavor of cake mix?
Yes, absolutely, that will work just fine. I have used white, yellow, and even chocolate when I didn’t have a box of vanilla.
Can this be made with another type of fruit?
Yes, you can make this with other berries, we love making this with blackberries from our garden each summer.
Can this be made with canned fruit?
I have not tried it with canned berries, like a pie filling. But I have made this with canned peaches (drained) and that turned out fantastic.
I added a scoop of fresh homemade coconut ice cream on the side. (more on that soon) But for now, pick up some blueberries next time you are grocery shopping & make some delicious cobbler.
How many can this serve?
This recipe makes about 8 servings, depending on your portion sizes. It is enough for our family of 5, leaving some for the kids the next evening.

Can this recipe be doubled?
I don’t advise doubling in the same pan as that would drastically change the baking time. However, you should be able to fit 2 casserole dishes side-by-side in the oven, so you could just make two if this recipe isn’t enough.
HOW DO YOU MAKE Blueberry Cobbler?
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Lightly spray 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray.
- Spread berries in an even layer over the bottom of the pan.
- Add the dry cake mix over the top.
- Slowly pour the soda over the top of the cake mix, making sure you moisten nearly all of the dry mix. This will give you your crust.
- DO NOT STIR – if you stir you will have a top more like cake- not crust.
- Bake 45-60 minutes watching closely after the 45 min mark – allow it to brown on top.
- If you want it really brown you can broil the top for a couple minutes.
- Remove & allow to cool slightly before serving.
- We prefer ours with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top.
What is the best way to store leftover cobbler?
I like to cover the dish and keep it in the refrigerator. Since this recipe is best when warm, just serve into a microwave-safe bowl or plate and microwave for 1-2 minutes or until hot.
Can this be made with frozen blueberries?
Yes, you absolutely can make this with frozen blueberries. Either way, it doesn’t matter and you don’t even have to thaw them ahead of the prep process.
To make Blueberry Cobbler you will need…
- fresh blueberries
- french vanilla cake mix

This recipe did not work for me. I didn’t see where it said how much sprite to use it even though I poured it very slowly it’s still left a lot of white cake mix on the top. Also I must’ve used too much pride because the bottom was just very thin and liquidy instead of like a cobbler. I was very disappointed in this.
Gina Kleinworth says
I’m sorry to hear that. Did you find the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post? It has all the quantities listed there. It should be 16 ounces of soda. It should cover most of the cake mix – but I’ll often take a fork and push down any cake mix that doesn’t soak up into the soda so there aren’t any dry spots -but generally there shouldn’t be a lot.
The final result for the cobbler will be the baked bubbling berries on the bottom and the crusty cake mix layer on top. If you were to mix it up, it would end up baking more like a cake, than a cobbler. It won’t be like a pie – because we aren’t adding a crust on the bottom – just berries and the topping.
Kimberly says
I was disappointed too. I followed the directions and used 16 oz. of soda. I poured it slowly and there were some areas that were not covered. I left it as is because the directions said to not stir. I was hoping that in the baking process the dry cake mix would be absorbed but that didn’t happen. When I pulled the cobbler out of the oven the same areas just had dry cake mix and underneath some of the cake that baked correctly there was dry cake mix. I wish I had known about the tip with using the fork and pressing down the dried cake mix.
Susan Berry says
can this cobble work using can blueberries, I have used can peaches before it was yummy.
Gina Kleinworth says
Hmmmm- I have never tried it before. I would think that it would work – but might not need as long of a baking time since the berries are already processed. I’d probably add a little liquid or reduce the time so it doesn’t dry out.
Andrea says
This was so easy to make and very delicious!! I will make it again for sure!!!
Nancy says
Can I use diet soda?
Gina Kleinworth says
I have not tried it.
Michelle says
So delicious! I used a can of blueberry pie filling (2 cans would have been better), a gluten free cake mix, and sparkling water. It turned out great! Topped it with a scoop of vanilla Dairy-free, gluten-free ice cream! Yum!!
Cindy says
If I use frozen blueberries, will there anything different I have to do or sdd.
Gina Kleinworth says
You might need to bake a bit longer because frozen berries will release more liquid. Or you can thaw them first, pat them dry and then follow the recipe as written.
Laurie says
Really easy and tasty. Used ginger ale and added some lemon juice to it. Topped with roasted coconut and cane suger for some crunch! Broiled and it was great. Watch carefully if you broil top. Could burn easily if not careful.
READ THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY TO HAVE SUCCESS.
Jennifer says
Perfect! And so easy. Will def send to my friends. I thought a can/bottle of soda was 16 oz. Thankfully I checked to find it was only 12oz. Once I had the right quantity, it was more than enough to cover the cake mix.
Heather says
Do you think you could use a gluten free cake mix for this? We have a young one at home that is on a gluten free diet.
Gina Kleinworth says
I would think that would work. I have not personally tried the gluten-free mixes, but I think as long as they are not almond flour-based then it should be fine. They create those to perform as close to a standard mix as possible.
Rosanne LeSage says
Incredible. Can wait to try
