Bloodshot Eyeball Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies are just like the soft & chewy crinkle cookies you love. But these are made spooky, so perfect for Halloween!
It’s that time of year, are you starting to think about Halloween. I start getting ideas flowing once August hits. Each year I try to make something with those funny candy eyeballs found in the Halloween party section.
Usually I go with a monster theme, but this year the hubs found me these bloodshot eyes & I knew instantly I wanted to make some deliciously soft & chewy Bloodshot Eyeball Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies.
You see, I’m always looking for an excuse to make crinkle cookies. They are a childhood favorite & I would look forward to them each & every holiday season.
Then last year I decided to make a red velvet version for Christmas. I packed them full of white chocolate chips, so they were extra tasty.

Needless to say, with as much as we all love crinkle cookies in this house, these didn’t last long. They were literally gone within a couple of hours of coming out of the oven.
These are absolutely heavenly, even if they are ghoolish for Halloween. So perfectly plump & that coating of confectioners sugar is to die for!
If you are a lover of all things red velvet, you will flip for these cookies. Everything you love about that great red velvet flavor, packed into a fun little cookie that the kiddos will love too.
Can you just picture these for a Halloween party or maybe brought to a class event for the kids? They are great for young & old alike.
Not too creepy, but definitely add the perfect amount of “EEEK” for a Halloween treat.
Here are some commonly asked questions
Can I make these with the regular Halloween eyes?
Yes- of course you can make these with the regular eyes. They just won’t have quite the same bloodshot effect as you get when they have the red splatter on them. But still cool, none the less.
What is the best way to store leftover eyeball red velvet crinkle cookies?
The easiest way is to place them in an airtight container & store at room temperature. Keep in mind that the confectioner’s sugar might get a bit moist in that airtight container & soak into the cookies a bit by day 2. So, please enjoy within 2-3 days.
How many can this serve?
I was able to get about 30 cookies out of this recipe. So if you are making this for a party, you might want to double up. Otherwise, there should be plenty to enjoy while you pass out candy to the kiddos coming by on Halloween.
crinkle cookies
Can this recipe be doubled?
Yes, absolutely. If you need a ton of cookies, double it up! I know they will still be gone in record time.
Do I really need to chill the dough?
YES- please, as hard as it is to wait- don’t skip the chilling process. It is key to making sure your dough is firm enough to hold together. Otherwise, you won’t get that beautiful crinkle-look you want with these cookies.
4 hours of chill time is a minimum. I like to do one of two things. I make the dough after dinner the night before & then bake in the morning.
Or I make the dough right after my morning coffee & then chill until after dinner. Then we have nice fresh cookies for dessert. It really depends on if I am keeping them or gifting.
Either way, there is a fair amount of snacking on the fresh ones as they come out of the oven too. Just sayin’.
HOW DO YOU MAKE Bloodshot Eyeball Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies?
- Combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, whip softened butter and sugar together until fluffy.
- Mix in eggs.
- Add buttermilk, vanilla, and red food color.
- Slowly mix in dry ingredients until just combined.
- Cover and chill dough at least 4 hours.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Roll chilled dough between hands into 1-1/2″ balls and then roll in confectioners sugar to coat.
- Bake on a parchment-lined baking sheet for 13-14 minutes.
- Immediately after removing from the oven, place the eyeballs on the cookies & press in before they cool.
- Cool on pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Can I use a gluten-free flour?
I’m not sure just yet. I have been meaning to give this a try but haven’t had a chance. If you do try this, I would recommend using a 1:1 flour like this one as I don’t believe it would require additional ingredients that are typically called for when trying to make cookie recipes in a gluten-free version. Please come back & tell me how they turned out.
What food color do you recommend?
I really love using a soft gel food color because the pigment is more intense and makes the dough less watery. Try this one from Americolor.
Can you freeze red velvet crinkle cookies?
Yes, but just not after baking. To freeze, just roll the cookie dough into balls & do not dip them in the sugar. Then place the dough balls on a plate or cookie sheet & flash freeze them. Once they’ve been flash-frozen, transfer them to a zip-top bag & freeze for up to 1 month. When you want to make the cookies, just thaw the dough for 20-30 minutes, roll into the sugar and bake!
