Growing up, getting a big soft pretzel at the mall was a bit treat. I looked forward to it every time we went.
Then every so often I would stray from my usual butter & salt pretzel & choose the one coated in cinnamon & sugar instead.
Now that is a whole new kind of heaven if you ask me. But I love both kinds & can never seem to get enough. I’m always craving more.
Fortunately, I can now make my own. Because our little mall here in tiny little North Idaho doesn’t have the pretzel shop I love so much.
Sure, I could drive over the border into Washington & visit their mall to get one. But I really don’t need to now that I can make my own.
Here are some commonly asked questions
Can I make this recipe with regular yogurt?
Unfortunately this recipe requires Greek yogurt. In general we add yogurt to bread recipes because of its acidity. It helps to relax the gluten, thus, making the bread more tender. It’s a common ingredient to make bread more tender, without changing the taste & without using fats like oil, butter, etc.
What is the best way to store leftover soft pretzels?
So, I like to keep my pretzels in a paper bag instead of an airtight container or plastic bag. I find that it can get a bit doughy & moist when they don’t have just a little bit of airflow. So the paper bag is great for letting in just enough air to keep the pretzels just right.
Can this dough be made ahead of time?
Yes you can make this ahead of time. Just prepare per the recipe instructions & then lay out some plastic wrap on the counter. Spritz the plastic with oil or non-stick spray. Then place the prepared dough in the center & wrap tightly. Place in the refrigerator until about 30 minutes prior to using.

Can this recipe be doubled?
Absolutely. We do this often & then store whatever we don’t use per the instructions above.
What if I don’t have self-rising flour?
You absolutely need self-rising flour for this recipe or it won’t work. Fortunately, you can make your own right at home. Just whisk together one cup of all-purpose flour, 1-1/2 tsp of baking powder & 1/4 tsp table salt to equal 1 cup of self-rising flour.
HOW DO YOU MAKE 3-Ingredient Soft Pretzels?
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
- Combine the self-rising flour & Greek yogurt in a mixing bowl & mix well using the dough hook attachment.
- Transfer to a well-floured flat surface & work into a ball.
- Flatten the ball into an 8-10″ disk.
- Cut into 8 equal pieces.
- Roll each one into a 14″ long log.
- Twist into a pretzel shape & place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Whisk the egg in a small bowl & then brush over the tops of each pretzel.
- Sprinkle on the coarse salt- if desired.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
- You know they are done when they have a hollow sound when you tap them with your fingernail.
Can I use a gluten-free flour?
I have not personally tried this. If you do try this, I would recommend using a self-rising flour like this one as I don’t believe it would require additional ingredients that are typically called for when trying to make bread-type recipes in a gluten-free version. Please come back & tell me how they turned out.
What should I do if my dough is too sticky?
If the dough is just too sticky, try adding in additional flour, 1-2 tbsp at a time. Just make sure you don’t add too much, which will make the dough dry & crumbly. Sometimes this can remedy itself when you are working it into a ball on your well-floured surface as the dough is naturally picking up more flour as you knead it.
Can two ingredient dough be made without a stand mixer?
Yes, you can make this dough without a stand mixer. I usually use a large bowl & a stiff silicone spatula to get the ingredients worked together enough so that I can turn it out onto my well-floured surface & really knead it together with my hands. Just keep working it until it is nice & smooth.

Carole Williamson says
Why is my dough so crumbly? And is adding more yogurt bad? I know the pretzel pieces recipe had equal parts flour and yogurt.
Gina Kleinworth says
How are you measuring the flour? If you are scooping it from the bag – there is a good chance you are adding up to 1/3 cup extra flour. I recommend spooning it into the measuring cup and then leveling off the top before adding it to the yogurt.
