When I first started making homemade jam I did it marmalade style. This meant cooking it for nearly an hour, standing there minding it the whole time.
You have to get the temp just right & if you overcook, well then you have a solid mass of inedible goo when it chills. That’s no Bueno.
Blackberry Jam
So over the years I have worked & reworked probably half a dozen or more recipes from grandma’s cookbook. Finally, I came up with this simple 3-ingredient recipe that takes ZERO time on the stove.
3-Ingredient Jam
That’s right- no cooking. Just a bowl & a whisk is all you need. Pretty good, right?
Now you can see why it’s become my favorite recipe to make & why it’s so easy to keep the homemade jam in the fridge at all times.
Mmmmmmmm, you can make this with frozen berries too. My secret for mashing the berries perfectly- put them in a zip-top bag & squish, squish, squish. Then put in your bowl, add your other ingredients & whisk, whisk, whisk. That’s it.
Here are some commonly asked questions
Can I use frozen blackberries?
Yes, absolutely, that will work just fine. Just be sure to thaw them before starting the recipe so that they are easily crushed during the preparation process.
Can I use a sugar substitute?
I have not personally tried it, so I can’t say how that would turn out. But if you would like to try it, I suggest a product that offers a 1:1 swap. Please let me know how it turns out.
Can this jam be frozen?
Absolutely and I encourage you to keep it frozen unless you are using it. I try to only thaw what I intend to use for the week.

How many can this serve?
This recipe makes about 12-16 ounces. I like to portion it into small 2-4 ounce jars so I am only thawing what we can reasonably eat before it would spoil. Those tiny little jars make great gifts for the neighbors too.
What is Ultra-Gel?
Ultra gel is a thickener similar to pectin. There is a link to the exact one that I used for this recipe below.

Can this recipe be doubled?
You can, and we do it often. Just double it up & then mix it all together. You’ll have enough jam to last you all year long.
Can I use pectin instead of Ultra Gel?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. While they both have thickening properties, they act upon the fruit in jams and jellies differently.
Pectin is a water-soluble fiber that is divided into very fine particles. It is usually used in cooked jam recipes because when heated with a sugar solution, it bonds with the sugar molecules and expands, thus creating a stable, gelled preserve.
Clear Jel is a modified cornstarch that is usually recommended for canning because it doesn’t lose its thickening powers after extended heating. A conventional cornstarch will start to break down at high heat and also doesn’t thicken high acid liquids well.
This really is the easiest & most delicious jam you’ll ever make.
HOW DO YOU MAKE 3-Ingredient Blackberry Jam?
- Place the berries in a strong zip-top bag, seal & squish with your hands until no large chunks remain.
- Transfer to a medium-sized mixing bowl.
- Add sugar, ultra gel and lemon juice if using.
- Whisk briskly for approx 3 minutes.
- Let sit for 2 minutes before transferring to sterile jars – keep refrigerated.
What is the best way to store leftover blackberry jam?
I keep ours refrigerated in small, airtight jars for up to 10 days. Remember that this doesn’t have preservatives like what you find in the store. So anything that you can’t use within that 10 days should be kept in the freezer.
Can this recipe be canned?
I have not personally tried it. But you can fill sterilized jars with the mixture, leaving 1/2″ headspace. Wipe the sealing edge of the jar with a clean, damp paper towel. Adjust lids & process in a boiling water bath or pressure canner for the proper amount of time for your elevation.

Hi Lana,
Ultra gel is a thickener similar to pectin. There is a link to the exact one that I used for this just above the recipe – it says “for this recipe you will need” & then the links to what I used.

Frankie says
How long will this keep in fridge?
Gina Kleinworth says
Since there aren’t any preservatives, I wouldn’t go beyond a couple weeks. But honestly, it’s so good that our batches are gone much quicker than that.
Patty says
This looks so easy and great…could this be frozen after it is made ?
Gina Kleinworth says
Yes it can, I usually make a couple batches at once & put all but one jar in the freezer.
Kaitlyn says
Can this recipe be hot water canned and keep correct consistency?
Gina Kleinworth says
I’m not sure, I have never tried it, unfortunately. If you decide to give it a go, please come back & let me know the result as I’m sure others would like to know as well.
Katie says
I’m wondering if your recipe would work for other berries or is it strictly blackberry? It sounds fantastic!
Gina Kleinworth says
Yes, that will work fine.
I encourage you to view the section of frequently asked questions that I answer in the post – they cover all sorts of topics you might also have questions too.
donna l Huffman says
Can you use Sure-Gel instead?
Gina Kleinworth says
I believe sure gel is pectin- please refer to the frequently asked questions section of the post for the details on that. You can check some of our other freezer jam recipes that use pectin to find one that might be closer to what you are looking for.
Sandy says
Can this jam be frozen for longer storage?
Gina Kleinworth says
Absolutely – I have several in my freezer right now. It should keep for 6-9 months depending on conditions (providing there aren’t any power outages or things that would raise the temp of the freezer for a period of time)
