If you love Disney recipes but can’t get to the theme park, this Disney Inspired Clam Chowder Bread Bowl will give you all the flavors of New Orleans Square!
Do you love Disney? I grew up not far from the park in Anaheim, so we went there all the time.
The first 20 years of my life were spent going to Disneyland as often as possible. One of my absolute favorite things about going is the food.

new england clam chowder recipe
I love chowder already, but putting it in a sourdough bread bowl just puts it over the top for me when it comes to favorites. You just can’t go wrong with that flavor combo of clams & sourdough bread.
It’s heaven, I’m telling you! I have to say, it’s really dangerous for me that I can make this at home, whenever I crave it. That means you can bank on this being my dinner at least several times a month. Yep- I love it that much!

I mean – check it out! Making that awesome Disney inspired chowder bowl is as easy as toss & cook in the slow cooker! YUM!
Oh boy do I want some more! This is A-MAZ-ING!!!!
Here are some commonly asked questions
What is the best way to store leftover clam chowder?
Place any leftover clam chowder in a shallow airtight container and label with the date. Keep for up to 4 days.
Why use a shallow container to store the leftovers?
Well, when the container is shallow, the contents chill faster than if you were to use a large, deep container. Ideally, you don’t want it to take too long for the leftovers to get to their chilled/stored temperature.
As I mentioned, if the food remains above about 35 degrees for more than 1 hour after cooking, the bacteria starts to grow.
Should I use salted or unsalted butter?
This is really a personal preference. I usually use whatever I have on hand & I really don’t pay too close attention to what butter I have.
But I typically keep salted butter on hand. These days with groceries being more difficult to find – I basically get whatever the store has available at the time and make it work.
What are the different types of clam chowder?
- New England Clam Chowder – This is the most common, made with a creamy base, potatoes, onions, and bacon. You won’t find any tomatoes in this one.
- Manhattan Clam Chowder – This one has a clear broth base, spices, vegetables, tomatoes, and clams.
- Long Island Clam Chowder – If you really just can’t decide, this one is for you. Long Island Clam Chowder combines New England and Manhattan with a creamy tomato base.
- Rhode Island Clam Chowder – This one is basically a clear version (instead of creamy) of New England Clam Chowder.
HOW DO YOU MAKE Slow Cooker Clam Chowder?
- Cook the bacon until it’s crispy. Remove & set aside. Chop once it has cooled.
- While the bacon is cooking add broth, clams with juice, potatoes, onion, celery, dill, parsley, salt, pepper & butter to the slow cooker. Cover and cook on high 3-4 hours or on low 5-6 hours.
- During the last hour – add the half & half and the bacon.
- In a separate bowl combine the milk and cornstarch, whisking well. Add to the soup and stir.
- In the last ½ hour – add the potato flakes, ½ a cup at a time – waiting about 10 minutes before adding more until you reach the thickness you desire.
- Hollow out the bread bowls by cutting a circle in the top. Pull off the piece you cut and then pull out more of the inside of the bread until it is deep enough to hold the chowder, but not to where it is thin along the bottom and sides.
- Ladle out into bread bowls, top with some of the bread you removed from your bread bowl & enjoy.

What slow cooker do you use?
We actually have several slow cookers that we have acquired over the years from doing this job. I have a smaller one that is great for half recipes.
But the one I use the most is this standard, no-frills slow cooker that is perfect for this particular recipe.
Can I make this vegetarian?
This part is easy. Just omit the bacon and use vegetable broth to make this clam chowder vegetarian-style.

Can this recipe be cut in half?
Oh of course! If you aren’t cooking “family-style” then cutting this recipe in half will work perfectly for you.
Can I make this without the bacon?
Bacon is what makes this chowder New England, so I highly recommend not skipping the bacon. But if you absolutely MUST – then, yes you can leave it out. But I can say the final result won’t be nearly as good.
