A couple weeks ago I shared with you all my Honey Pumpkin Spice Black Bread. It was great but I really wanted to see if I could do it in the slow cooker because sometimes I want to make bread & my main dish at the same time & I don’t have a double oven. Sooooo- I decided to create this recipe & it turned out great.
Slow Cooker Black Bread
Oh they were the best dinner rolls with our BBQ chicken breast & a baked potato.
They were also great with the Concord Grape Spread I shared last week.
It’s such a simple recipe- I was so pleased with how well this turned out.
Slow Cooker Black Bread
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp Rapid rise yeast - I like Red Star Platinum
- 2ยฝ cups all-purpose flour
- ยผ cup butter - melted
- 2 tsp molasses
- 1 tsp salt
- ยพ cup honey
- 1 tbsp cocoa
- 1 pkt Starbucks House Blend instant coffee
- Oats to sprinkle
Instructions
- Line slow cooker with parchment & lightly spray with cooking spray.
- Combine milk, sugar & yeast in the mixer bowl. Wait 5 minutes to proof & then mix.
- Add ยฝ of the flour, butter, molasses & salt - combine using dough hook.
- Let sit 2 minutes to rest.
- Add remaining flour, honey, cocoa & coffee. Mix to combine.
- Knead in mixer with dough hook 4-5 minutes (or 10 min by hand) until elastic.
- Allow the dough to rest 5 minutes.
- Pull off pieces & shape into rolls & place in slow cooker. -It's okay to double the layers if your cooker is smaller.
- Sprinkle with a little bit of oatmeal.
- Cover & cook on high 1ยฝ hours or until it sounds hollow when tapped with your fingernail.
- Remove lid & do not allow condensation to drip on bread.
- Lay a paper towel over cooker top & recover. Wait 10 minutes before removing.

It’s so easy Heather
I have got to try making bread in the slow cooker, this sounds amazing! Thanks for linking up with What’s Cookin’ Wednesday!
It’s so easy Karly & I love this method in the summer so I don’t have to run the oven. But it’s also great when I have something already baking & want to make bread too.
I love baking bread in my slow cooker and this particular bread is one of my favorites.
Gina, my dear, thank you so much for linking up with The Party Bunchโฆ We are featuring you tomorrow as one of our favorites! Love you to pieces. Desiree
Is there an ideal number of rolls to divide this recipe into? Looking forward to trying it, but it’ll be my first attempt at making bread in my crock pot, so I’m a little unsure of the specifics. Also, if one doesn’t have packets of instant coffee, but a bigger container, what is the measurement?
I would say 12-15 rolls for this recipe is ideal. As for the coffee, I would do 1 tablespoon.
I made this last night. It tastes really good, but, mine didn’t get the hard(er) crust you mention in step 10 of the recipe. I cooked it my crockpot for about 2 hours but even though the bread was done, my crust was still very soft. Any guess as to why this happened ?
It could be a number of things. I have not made this particular recipe in many years. But I think that it is either the humidity where you live OR it could be the condensation inside the crockpot. You can place a paper towel between the lid and the pot while it is cooking towards the end of the cooking process – this can help with absorbing the moisture so the bread doesn’t.
