After 20 years of having a spouse in the fire service, we are very in touch with those around us that give back to our community each & every day. Beyond those that get paid to wear the uniform, there are countless others in every community that give of themselves for free.
They sacrifice their time with their own families so that they can be out helping those in their community that need it the most. It often goes unnoticed & unrecognized, so we like to take some time to so a little something nice to show our appreciation to them.
The kids & I made these Chocolate Covered Pretzels to take to the volunteer firehouse in our area to let them know that what they do is so needed & that we know the sacrifice they make.

Here are some commonly asked questions
What is the best way to store chocolate-covered pretzels?
We like to keep these in an airtight container or in a resealable bag at room temperature. I don’t recommend refrigeration as the pretzels will get soft in the humid environment.
How long do chocolate-covered pretzels last?
These tasty little snacks will keep for as long as the pretzels stay fresh. Try to limit their exposure to the air when you aren’t serving them for maximum shelf-life. I have had these stay good for as long as a month.
The chocolate itself will last quite a while, so the issue really comes down to how long you can keep the pretzels from going stale. Keep in mind that the mini twists will probably last longer than the rods since they are completely covered in the chocolate vs the rods that are only half-dipped.
EASY HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE-COVERED PRETZELS
Ingredients for Chocolate-Covered Pretzels
- mini pretzels
- pretzel rods
- candy melts any variety you choose – or chocolate chips (if using chocolate chips you will need to also add shortening or coconut oil when melting the chocolate)
- sprinkles of choice
What kind of chocolate is used for chocolate-covered pretzels?
We love using candy melts because not only are made from a special blend of ingredients that helps the chocolate melt smoothly and easily – but they come in a wide variety of colors.
You can make these using any variety of chocolate chips. Keep in mind that chocolate chips are specially formulated to hold their shape even when heated. So, if you decide to use them in place of the candy melts, you will need to add a bit of shortening or coconut oil to the bowl when melting the chips. This helps them to turn into a smooth, velvety texture that is perfect for dipping.
How to Make Chocolate-Covered Pretzels
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, heat the candy melts in the microwave at 50% power in 30-second increments stirring in between each cycle until the chocolate is melted & smooth. Mine took 2 min 30 seconds for the milk chocolate and a bit longer for the white – but be sure to not overdo it. The white in particular will seize if it is heated for too long.
- Dip each pretzel into the chocolate then flip to coat. Allow the excess chocolate to drizzle off, lifting it out with a fork or chocolate dipping tool. Tap on the side of the bowl to limit the excess before placing each one on the prepared parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Shake on the sprinkles if using & continue until you have used up all of the chocolate.
- My pretzels were set within 10-15 minutes. If you need to speed yours along, place them on the baking sheet in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes.
- Remove & transfer to an airtight container & store at room temperature.
What is a chocolate-covered pretzel?
A chocolate-covered pretzel is a pretzel that has been dipped in chocolate. The chocolate can be any type of chocolate, such as milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate. The pretzel can also be coated in other things, such as chopped nuts, sprinkles, or shredded coconut.
Why didn’t my chocolate wafers melt correctly?
When your chocolate wafers become chunky rather than creamy, it is said that the chocolate is seized. This is typically due to overheating or contact with water or steam.
In the first case, the chocolate is just burning from excess heat, but in the second case, there is a negative reaction between the chocolate (which is waxy and has many oils that are hydrophobic, or “water-fearing”) and the water, causing the components of the chocolate to separate.
Be sure to refer to the package directions when melting chocolate to prevent this from happening.
What are some creative ways to use chocolate-covered pretzels?
Some creative ways to use chocolate-covered pretzels include: as an ice cream topping, in a trail mix, as a decoration on cakes or cupcakes, as a snack for kids’ parties, or as a gift for friends or family members who love chocolate and pretzels.

Pretzel Dipping Tips
- The best part is that these are perfect for an easy treat for the holiday season.
- Almond bark or white chocolate chips can be used in place of the white candy melts.
- Be sure to only melt chocolate until it just starts to soften and then stir well. The heat from the chocolate will help melt it all completely without overheating during the melting process.
- Be sure to start with salty pretzels for a salty sweet treat.
- Wrap them in cellophane bags or plastic bags and tie them with a cute ribbon for a great gift.
- We like to do half of the pretzels in white chocolate wilton candy melts and the other in either colors or milk chocolate.
- Pick a contrasting color of chocolate to add a fancy drizzle over the first layer of chocolate for favorite Christmas treats.

Why make chocolate-covered pretzels?
There are many reasons to make chocolate-covered pretzels. They make a great snack, they can be given as gifts, and they can be used to decorate cakes or cupcakes. Chocolate-covered pretzels are also a fun activity to do with kids.
Pro Tips for the Best Chocolate-Covered Pretzels
- Melt the chocolate in a highball glass or tall cup when doing the pretzel rods so that the chocolate is deeper for dipping.
- These make GREAT gifts and ship well if you wanted to send a care package to loved ones serving overseas.
- Avoid moisture – the chocolate won’t melt correctly if it comes in contact with water.
- Add the sprinkles and toppings while the chocolate is still wet. You don’t want to do all of the dipping and then come back and find that it has set before you add the sprinkles. Do 1-2 at a time, add the toppings and then continue dipping.
- Be sure to line your baking sheet with parchment. Not only does this help with releasing the chocolate but makes for easy cleanup.
- I like to use a chocolate dipping set. I have found in the past that using a fork leaves a lot more chocolate on the items I am dipping because the tines are too close together. You can get that nice, professional look by using the dipping tools.
- Wax paper can be used instead of parchment when lining the cookie trays.
- Add any of your favorite topping ingredients when making this salty treat.
- You can use semi-sweet chocolate or chocolate melts using a double boiler.
- Be sure to use a microwave-safe bowl when preparing the chocolate coating.
Can I freeze chocolate-covered pretzels?
I don’t recommend freezing. As I mentioned before when talking about storing the pretzels, the cool, damp environment of the fridge or freezer will make the pretzels soft.
