This Tin Fish Art is a simple homemade art project you can do with the kids. If you love coastal decor & unique art adorning your walls, this is perfect.

We have been needing to update the walls in the stairwell. The whole house in beach themed.  Since we live so far from home (So Cal) we miss it & want our home to reflect our sand & surf personalities even when we can’t be there all the time. I decided for the stairwell I would create a funky tin fish art piece to add some visual interest to a place that is often forgotten.

I started with a foam board, Command™ hooks & strips, a little hot glue for creating texture & some aluminum foil.

I started by taking my hot glue & making a wave pattern on my foam board. Just random squiggles – nothing fancy.

Then I sprayed the back side of the aluminum foil with spray adhesive & glued it down over the waves.

I took an art smudger & gave it a good rub to bring out all the texture under the foil.

Then I took a little black paint & rubbed it in to all the fine details on the foil to enhance them.

Then I cut out some fish shapes & traced them onto 36 gauge aluminum. This can be purchased at the art supply store & it’s thicker than regular kitchen grade tin foil. It’s soft & bendable & yet doesn’t slice – so safe to work with.  It’s the same stuff you would use in art class as a kid.

Once I made my indentations of my shapes I cut out the fish – I think we ended up with nearly 50 for this project in various sizes.

Then I took some metal carving tools & scored some patterns into the fish.

I then used the same method for the fish as I did the background & rubbed some green & blue paint onto the fish letting it settle into the indentations.

Then I used the Command™ Strips to attach each fish in a random pattern over my textured foam board.

I added a couple wire loops on the back of the board for hanging.

The final step was to hang it.  We used Command™ Hooks in clear. Marked where we wanted it – applied the strip, then the hook & we were done. I love using Command™ Hooks because they are damage free, which is great for someone like me who is leery of putting holes in the walls of my brand new home. They hold strongly & remove cleanly – definitely a win, win.

Now we finally have some fun art for the stairs!
